I have many dun birds in my flock, both naked neck and non naked neck. I love the coffee illustration, describes dun perfectly.

I don't know @Kev . I still can't tell if it's safe to name this one Sylvester.

This is the sweetest, most mild-tempered and calmest chick in the hatch:

And this one has the yellowest legs I've ever seen on a chick, though the photo doesn't show it. (I used a baby blue background and it totally messed with the camera colorizing.)

I would wait. my Jumbo had legs like that. she has been named Jumbo because I didn't want to change the name. for the first 8 weeks I thought she had been a boy.
It was a massive migraine headache sort of day so I got to spend more time than usual staring down at the chicks. I am now 95% confident that Sylvester is a cockerel. Not only has his comb grown significantly in the past couple days, but he is a big-time chest bumper with another chick I know is a male. So....definitely "Sylvester". (And I think I even have a "Tweety" in the group too.)

I ordered a copy of that big chicken genetics book (Hutt, I think?) - the first time I ordered it, it got stolen off of my porch after being delivered, along with a copy of The Call of the Hen. I got replacements from Amazon without much fuss (thank you Amazon Prime). But I got a huge kick thinking about the thief who got himself/herself a copy of this giant book on chicken genetics.![]()
Sorry about the migraine. It must be going around - I had two while visiting my family for the holidays. Migraines are terrible, but they are compounded when one is sleeping on the sofa in the tv room.It was a massive migraine headache sort of day so I got to spend more time than usual staring down at the chicks. Quote: LOVE the dubia idea. Or maybe chicken poop...
Embarrassed to say that I haven't had a chance to really study them yet - life got kind of crazy.![]()
Oh, and it's looking like lavender anything is out the window now. I was on the way home from the airport when my chicken sitter texted me saying that Goodwin and two pullets were missing at the bed time headcount. I went tramping all over with a flashlight until well after dark - Goodwin is missing presumed dead - lots of feathers trailed through the yard (though no blood, no body), also a CL pullet and BCM pullet missing, though no feathers from them - I am hopeful they are safe and went into hiding while he was defending them. I won't know any more until tomorrow morning. I'm thinking fox.
They could only have been out there by flying out of their paddock. I would claim Darwin award, except I believe Goodwin may have been defending the silly pullets.
Sigh.
