My Jubilee Orps hatch with similar down. If I recall correctly that little headspot is indicative of the Columbian gene, not gender. Oh, and my OEGB x Salmon Faverolle pullet that I posted upthread also had a small headspot. She is most definitely carrying Columbian as that's her adult plumage. Edited to add her chick pic:

Thanks! I was just reading about chick down. But as (I think) both parents have Co, I would have expected all of them to show it. I did find something indicating the small spots being seen in eWh (wheaten), and implying that the Columbian gene makes the down gold rather than cream (all of them have golden/reddish down)...

(This down color thing is scrambling my head, though. Off to read some more...)

Chick down is a pain. Just to throw another wrench in for you, Mahogany can turn down red/gold too and the NH definitely have that. Thanks! I was just reading about chick down. Well, I thought I sort of understood Columbian. I just read the Hutt book section. Now I REALLY don't understand it. I give up.
(Kev, when are you writing that easy-to-understand chicken genetics book?!)

On kippenjungle, it says New Hampshires are eWh/eWh and Co/Co.
Who knows what Tank's make up is, but he has Co because of his coloring/tail, I think. I've clearly got a lot more reading to do...
