Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Now the girls - I think I really do have 3, hopefully.

This is the biggest (14.18oz) (am becoming more hopeful this is a girl):

Next biggest (12.73oz) - she has always been quite reserved when I interact with them, I'm watching her to see if it's her nature (or feeling overrun but he crazy boys), she was definitely much quieter this morning, I might give them a short course of Amprolium just in case.

This is the "runt" girl (11.15oz) - she'ss feathering out the slowest and she was also the last to hatch by a good many hours:

Overall I've been very pleased with this cross. The chicks are also very healthy and friendly - though quite rambunctious and messy. I need to get them outside very soon.

I should add that I weighed that more reserved pullet I'm watching (so far nee name is "#8"

), and she has gained two ounces since Wednesday, which is somewhat reassuring. Gonna treat them anyway - getting to that awkward age where it's really hard to keep their water and brooder clean no matter what you do...

cute chicks!

don't worry about your runt girl. I had 3 similar that are my biggest hens now.

it is day 23 and no sign of chicks. when should I switch the bator off?

Thanks - that's reassuring.

It depends. If you had a lower temp throughout incubation, they might hatch late, but day 23 seems pretty late...
I don't know if I am getting crazy but I have just heard some chirping. 1 or 2 eggs look like leaking - I don't know how to explain that. reminds me on a peach or pine tree when the resins are leaking.

If they look like that, they are rotten/bad. VERY carefully remove them and seal them in a plastic bag - they can explode, and you don't want them to explode in the incubator/hatcher. (Even if the eggs are all dead, it would make clean up for next time very hard)

X's 2!!

thanks.

1 was leaking. I took it out and sprayed the rest. as they are marans eggs I cannot see what is going on inside. I see dark only.

How far along? Marans are pretty dark eggs..can hardly see anything towards the end of incubation, they fill up the whole egg, and it's really dark!
