Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I went from zero broodies to six overnight, but unlike you I am NOT in a position to hatch any more eggs. As of today I'm down to 94 birds. Darn chicken math!

I processed four of my extra cockerels today while keeping a wary eye on the wildfire burning just 15 minutes away from my house. It was started this past Sunday and has grown to over 40,000 acres, doubling every day because of the high winds. We've been lucky that the wind has been blowing the fire away from our house...until today. Unfortunately we have a lot of friends and acquaintances who haven't been so lucky and have been busily evacuating themselves and their animals to keep everyone safe. All of this because a couple idiots who definitely should've known better decided to shoot exploding targets in a dry desert resplendent with highly flammable brush and didn't even bother to bring anything like fire extinguishers, just in case. I'd really like a chance to smack the stupid outta those guys.

There's been alot of fires down there the last few years. The one on Huachuca came just a couple hundred feet from my sisters house. They evacuated, and went back later to find firetruck tire tracks in their grass and everything was covered in ash and smoke stain, even inside the house. Very scary. Then, when the monsoons came later that summer, the loss of bushes and trees holding the mountainside together lead to massive mudslides that took out many properties that were spared the fire itself.... Will cross my fingers and toes for you.
We've been getting red flag warnings everyday for the last few days here in Graham county, too. Very windy and very dry.

XD Does anyone know why one of my turken chicks like to jump on the backs of the other turkens? She just stands on their back and does nothin' else, sometimes she jumps from back to back.

It's very funny..

She sounds adorable, I'd love to see that! How old is she and how big are the ones she's jumping on? Mine all jump on their mother's back all the time and even ride around like that for as long as they can keep their ballance

They're about 5 weeks old and too small to jump on eachother. Their mother is the only adult with them so I don't know what they would do if there were others around.

:gig They all seem to be between three and four weeks. They are pretty tiny and the other turkens are only slightly bigger than her, yet she still mangages to jump onto their back and stay there for a few seconds before falling off again. I keep on trying to videotape her but it always happens at the most unexpected of times and she falls off before I can start filming. :gig

No name for this little one. Almost 7 weeks. Supposed to be a bantam. I posted before and some said pullet. Any thoughts on gender. The comb is starting to turn red at the top.

The first one is from the Zen egg Christine!   That bird got big!

Can't keep boys.  Had to give some up.
The second one is from Draye..pretty baby.  :)
The first black is from Chirstine, and the second one from Draye.  They were sweet.  Easy going.    I didn't notice the feather thing!   It may just grow out of it..had a few like that .. that did once they got bigger.  In fact, my Gladys outside had the most weird tail feathers going on in the tip of the tail.  Thought she was just going to be different.  Well, she has a very pretty tail now.  Hope those feathers work out ok on this little one.

So, you got that big rig home ok?

I have one from you Christine now..that I am sooo sooo hoping is a girl.  From Coca Puffs egg.   I have surgery tomorrow.  .  .  But, will get photos when I am able to .. first thing when I can.  I can see the coloring just getting prettier all the time.  It's speckled.  Started out being a buff chick with a dot on it's head.  Then all of this different coloring started coming in.
The barred one is looking more speckled than barred, or a mix of it.  Still too soon to see what that's going to do.
The Prince egg chick is looking what we could have guessed..a lot of black barring on wings.

Draye, there is one almost like that boy up there of yours..the light buff one..that is really looking nice.  Like I said, photos when I get back.
Oh, the other brown one I kept, Christine, with the cute extra brown face, is looking partridge.

look forward to the pictures.

Do you do like me and mark them as they hatch? I use the strawberry plastic containers to put them in and hatch them in rooster groups or if I know a certain hens egg together. When I remove them I use the small secure ties and attach them to the legs.

I may not know the mothers but I can at least keep up with the baby daddies. Occasionally I can tell the mother if she is an oddball color or something.

This year though I haven't kept up with either. I wasn't planning on keeping any until later in the year so I didn't bother marking them.

I've got one that went broody last week, doesn't want to give up either. She's getting moved Saturday or Sunday. This one is from my September hatch so she's only about 8 months old. I've never seen one try to go broody that young.

That strawberry container idea is awesome! I can't believe I never thought of it!
