Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Sold 9 8 week old birds yesterday. Had quite a few cockerel this time around so I picked out 3 cockerels and then tried to match up some pullets for each one. Didn't get them perfectly matched, but the buyers kind of mixed them up anyway so I guess they were happy.

Can't figure out where that barring came from in my flock. I don't have any Barred birds at all. Though there is some barring in the background of some of my birds. Guess things can pop out. I'm going to watch for that trait to pop out.

yeah I got a few that turned out in the small side too. Don't know why. I did handle the. Yesterday though and they seem to have a little weight to them.keeping to see how they turn out.

I guess I'll have to post more pics of that barred one later on, as he insists on being different! haha!

Ya, I don't mind small as long as they're meaty, and pass that on to future generations.

Pulled 27 out of the incubator this morning. Did a wick count then got them under the lamo.

3 weee fully feathered they were reddish colored, most likely be Alohas.

There were 4 whites, holding my breath until I know fir sure they're going to be white, I've had them change in me.

4 Black, don't know if they'll turn Birchen or not. 1 blue and 1Splash.

So, those chicks I got from Cynthia12 a couple weeks ago are growing fast, and are even a bit pudgy compared to how my other breeds were at the same age. Since the nights are gonna be warm from this point on here in Az, and these kids are so full of spunk and obviously need more space, I partitioned off a part of the bachlor pad/grow out where my 10 week old cockerels are at, and moved them outside. They certainly seem to like the extra space. I like having chicks out there, too, because I'm coming in from the side instead of over head. So that way they don't get that mini freak out whenever I walk by. I just put them out there yesterday afternoon and they already seem much happier.

The one on the perch is the one we both though may be Aloha. She looks to possibly have a pea comb and showing very pale skin (no yellow). She's also one of the shy-est out of them.

I'm liking this darker buff one, she's developing some nice rich hues and has become more outgoing over the last week.

The blue barred little cockerel that Cynthia said was one of Drayes is growing out some very bold blue barring with a teeny bit of buff highlights. He's gonna be neat looking, but I think he may be one I'll be looking for a new home for later.

The two black hens are staying kinda small, but I'm hoping maybe they'll catch up later. As long as they are meaty heavy birds, since that's what I'm aiming for, they will definitely be keepers. I'm still unsure on that big black one. He/she is showing some combo welsummer/partridge patterns in the black. Someone posted a pic of a bird a while back that I think he's going to look very similar too. The dark brown/red male I am completely in the air over. I really only want to keep one rooster out of these, so I may not make a decision on any of them until they grow up and start showing what kind of bird they are gonna be.

I honestly can't remember which of your chicks came from my hatch and which came from Draye's, but the barring is strong in my flock, as is some mottling (like the Alohas) and about 1/3 of my hatchlings have a pea comb or rose comb because of the EE and Ameraucana blood. If any of the blacks came from my birds, they often appear on the smaller side, but grow to have tighter feathering and dense bodies that look small but pack a surprising amount of meat. And I've been breeding for meatier birds with faster growth rates wherever possible. I hope that means you'll have some good meals in your future.

That sounds about right. Those two little black pullets are small but hefty so far. (kinda reminds me of a girl I knew in HS.. hehe..) The barring is a neat look on that one, but I'm not really interested in having barred birds in my flock. I have some BR's that I ended up with that are probably all going to end up in the freezer. This little boy is just outgoing and friendly enough, I'd hate to do that to him, and i think I'd rather just find a new home for him. I have an Australorp cockerel that I may be finding a home for two for a similar reason. It's hard to cull a bird with a nice personality... :p

Found one more that I missed this morning. Total 28.
Three out all the unhatched eggs. There were19 that were not fertile. So that means that I set 36 fertile eggs. When you count out the unfertile egg, that gives me a 75% hatch rate.

Trying for better rate than that at least needs to be a 90 to 98%.

So now I have a total of 36 chicks in the brooder room. 8 of them are 6 days older. You can see a definite size difference.

I just love taking photos of these kids :)

Guess it's time to get them on the fermented feed

This lil chick...I think that's just excited redness. Interested to see what colors she'll be as an adult

Thinking about keeping this guy. Not sure yet.

Sorry, had to throw a couple of brabanter chicks in lol.

"Here, lemme get that feed off your beak for ya, will ya??"

Actually you guys..one of those blacks is from Draye, the other from Christine..Rizzo.. I remember Drayes blacks were really black black . But, Don't ask me which one is which now! lol Zen was the largest black one!

Ivy also has a large comb. Character!! The spot on the head..because it is barred, was a long wide spot. If we go by how you sex the reg. LF barred rock, then I would say boy. Acts like a boy. :)

Still loving the colors on Coco Puff's. Little cute white spots all over. Buff coming in on shoulders, wondering that can mean..boy? Not real red, but buff.

Dolly egg, with brown face, I'm thinking is a girl. Very mellow. Smaller than the rest.

That brown one you have cactus, is one of Drayes.

Take that back, I didn't keep Zen.
