Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Black skin is dominant & usually makes legs black too(sometimes dark willow or slate-ish). Here's a chick out a father that didn't have the gene, mother that had it:

Feather legs is a major headache to completely clean out after a cross with feather leg because it involves several different genes.. don't think I'd ever do that again.. (btw chick above is clean legged)

There was a movement to work for this goal in the NN club many years ago.. seems to have gone away though? It would be a great addition as it seems to be a popular color on NN.

SOOOO anyways.. pics?

edited to add, was going backwards in posts: Jim as in happycowboy on here? He had great blue NN! Seems he had to let his flock go(?).. be great if other people kept his line going.. I don't have any of his birds- too many birds here as is!

Thanks Kev, Now THAT is a well informed response. Do you still have the hen with black skin ? Do you have any pictures of your new chicks ?

If that RIR line has good temperament(a problem in some lines, especially some production bred lines for extremely aggressive roosters), type etc. then my guess is it should be good. RIR usually have great yellow legs, plus bring in desirable genes for good red color from the show stock RIR.

Yellow legs are due to 2 main genes- yellow skin plus Id (dermal melanin blocker). Id prevents pigments from being laid down in a specific layer of skin. Result is yellow legs on a yellow skin bird, white legs on a white skin.. If bird does not have Id: yellow skin+ leg pigment= willow legs. White skin + leg pigment= slate legs.

Id is also sex linked, so if you are dealing with blue/willow legs and want yellow it is good to plan mating according to sex and your goal. Example, a willow leg roo over yellow leg hen: only the sons will have yellow legs(but not pure for it- don't know if Id has a dosage effect), all daughters will have willow legs(no Id at all). Yellow leg roo over willow leg hen= all yellow leg daughters, sons yellow legs also but not pure for Id... if you use only the daughters and breed back to a pure Id rooster, the line will be pure for yellow legs from this point on.

Yellow skin is recessive, so slate or white leg birds basically are the least desirable, with yellow legs being the goal. It's possible for white/slate to carry yellow skin, you just don't know unless you know the parentage or it has produced yellow/willow legs before. Better to use willow legs for crossing with yellow leg, this way all birds will be yellow skinned and your only concern from this point on is getting birds with Id.. however it is workable to use white leg birds if none of the other birds have yellow legs, the best way to deal with that situation is to breed a white leg to a willow leg (basically a cross of Id with yellow skin- and hope the white leg happens to be carrying yellow skin)[/quote :

I will have to re-read this when I get home & can really focus but what I am getting is that the RIR will be a good cross to work on the leg color & feather color if the temeperment is good(it is thank goodness, very gentel) I have no way to know the parentage of the NN roo that I have but he has a somewhat slate colored legs. It also seems that I need to study what willow color is. I will also copy the post above to refer back to when needed. Thank you for your post. Anything else you would tell someone that is completely new on breeding?

Turkens are the best chickens ever!

I talked with Ed Hayworth at the APA Nationals last week and he said there are just not enough people with enoughbirds showing NN's to get it approved.
I love the blue rooster from Jim. Why did he sell out? Do you know who bought his stock?
