Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Been a while since I've posted on here, and had to share a few pictures. Lucy laid her first GREEN egg on Friday and I've collected a total of 3. I thought I had two layers at first, but I may have just forgot to look on Thursday.

Here is Lucy.. close up. She has beautiful eyes

and Phoenix, the NN x Silkie mix. I'm wondering if he could carry the blue egg gene, since his father came from a green egg line and his mother was a silkie... Pretty boy..

The other NN x Silkie girl. Phoenix's full sister.

Could anyone on here be able to tell me as to how big my chicks should be at 7 week? I really would like them to get bigger fast cause then I plan on letting them free range during the day and we have coyotes wolves foxes and snakes here don't want my girls being anyone's lunch

Mine were quite small at 7 weeks. Maybe 1/2 the size of their full grown size. They were free ranging at 14 weeks because it was way too cold and snow covered prior.

Oh I thought NN's were big birds? Mine are tiny! Also is their any problem with them eating dog food I let them out to scratch stretch and peck around and they immediately go after the dog food!

Since so many NNs have other breeds in their background, it's really hard to say what size they should be. My girls were very tiny, but my boys were just a little smaller than a barred rock. The girls compared to a polish in size, but were heavy bodied. They may have weighed 4 lbs soaking wet.

As for the dog food - It's not something you want them to do, but mine also had that addiction (not just the NNs). I don't free feed my dogs anymore so there are no issues now.

Generally- hatchery stock are large heavy birds. A lot of NN from private persons have been mixed up, with a lot leaning towards 'regular size'- not so big/heavy or towards a large bantam. Huge heavy NN are the hardest to find- am working on that myself.

aoxa- why is it not good to let them eat dog food? I get bags of cat food for the peafowl and often give it as treats to the chickens.. is there something I don't know?

Just the general color of him is different from the rest... Never had chickens before. Always wanted to but never had the place to be able to do so. But my DH and I just perchased ten acres and I was able to fulfill my dream of having a small farm! Anywho my 14 baby's came along and they all have at least one other that has the same coloring except that little bugger... And sence I've never seen that color before just thought I'd ask. He/she is darker then a buff but not as dark as the reds and plus it has brown white gold stripes on its wings so just didn't know what color they called he/she?
Sorry I ramble lol

I ramble too! but working on it... lol Congrats on new everything! Fun isn't it?

It's hard to tell from your picture... could be a buff growing in his darker roo feathers.. if it's the white feathers that are new and only recently showed up, he might be a mottle (random white tips to the feathers- beautiful I think).
