Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Ok another question... I know NN's are considered a rare breed here in America cause a lot of people (DH included) think NN's are just ugly and can't get past their appearance to see as to how sweat this breed is, but are they considered a "heritage breed"?
If so is there any way I can breed my baby's to be considered "heritage" coming from hatchery stock?

And another question! Thanks for answering me I know I can be annoying...
What are the SOP's for NN's?

Well Kev, thanks to people like you I'm learning.
I got like 7 young red cockerels that I'm keeping after I cull the ones with one NN gene, but towards the end of the year I'm looking to keep 1 plus the dad ( his huge don't you think ?

He is a big beautiful boy.

How much does he weigh? The heaviest one I had was 13 pounds, extremely friendly and nice roo. really wish he was bred.. was distracted by so many projects so he passed on with no chicks. Argh.

Also, great start with the whites- pics from couple pages back.

I have a couple with yellow legs, is that just a personal preference thing or is this a show thing?
I also have a roo(red) with white/pink legs is this something I should cull or keep?

My goal is to have nice SQ NNS
Yellow legs is required for red and white naked necks

Black NN need to have black legs

And buff calls for light white ( pinkish) I wish I had some buffs.

Kev, he is a little over 10lbs last time I weigh him. And the hens are 7lbs

NAVA wonderful hugh "boy" all the rest are attractive also as we have learned to expect from you and your farm.

uglychickens I would not use the word "rare" to classify naked necks in this country. They are just not as popular as many of the other breeds with the different groups that hang out on BYC. There are many people who are familiar with their basic good traits but do not habituate this type of website. Some are just too busy.

Many of us here who raise them also like to mix and match with other breeds to introduce our own fancy "types". Nava is interested in the standard of perfection or SOP because she wishes to show and is heavily invested in breeding and selling. When you take animals to show there are guidlines that must be met if you wish to compete.

DDD one more week

I was reading up on chicken genetics and they said weaten males had tips of black on their feathers... I'm very confused here. Kev called my baby a weaten she is female of that I'm sure but she and her sister both have tips of blue/gray on wings and tales... Do I have to weight till their adults to really see their true color? Or am I totally off bace here... I'm so confused!!!
