Naked Neck/Turken Thread

It really doesn't look like a sunburn, its just like white flaky skin just on the very top of her neck. More like dry skin.
That is what I assumed on my NN, it comes and goes, mostly isn't visible, but will show up for a couple of days then go away again for a long time. I don't lotion them at all, just let them live their little chicken lives and I don't want to make the skin any less tough.

Yea thats what happens to mine but i just leave it alone and it go's away and i haven seen it back so just keep an eye on it and it should clear up

Thanks, I was really hoping I didn't do something wrong. First time chicken owner, and I got her with a few other chicks that I picked up for my sister and she didn't want her. So I have her, she is so awesome that I took on another one, she's only 3 weeks old. So I was hoping it wasn't me since I have 2 now.

By the way, when do they usually start laying eggs? I don't really know much about this breed.

Thanks everyone!

Only one of my NNs have started laying. She is 23 1/2 weeks old. The other two have not started laying yet....(same age).

Has anyone seen actual sunburn on NN? I have not.. the skin does turn red but that's been on mature cockerels/roosters and laying hens. Young birds and non laying hens have normal looking pink necks, no red at all... I also suspect they don't sunburn because some young birds can have really red spots on face/comb yet their necks are 'normal'.

I suspect the flaky skin happens on all chicks as part of their rapid growth, just not really visible on non-NN except as dander all around brooder, the room etc. Just an idea and have not done anything for it either.

Totally agree on all points, and I have never seen a sunburn either.

Not sunburn at all, like kev says it must be the rapid growth,

Rob, how's that nn pullet doing?
Hope her neck is better

I'm seriously contemplating sticking with just NNs

That means I gave to find homes for my BLRW AND ENGLISH ORPS

I really like those, but I also want to concentrate on my SQ NNS

UGH!!!!
