Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Thanks everyone. We have now fortified the door and gone to town and to get some electric fencing. We will get our game camera out and put it up to make sure it was a bear. What makes me really upset was that we have an interior door that separates the parts of the run. It has been swinging closed and the hens who prefer the nest on one side or the other get mad because they would be closed off from their favorite nest until I went out in the mornings and reopened the door. Well last night, I tied it open so it wouldn't swing shut. If I hadn't have tied it open, the bear would probably not have killed so many hens. (There is a small hen door in the interior door) I think the chickens would have gone thru the chicken door and not the bear! Bummer!

The weird thing was last night I dreamed that someone had put all my chickens in three boxes and set fire to them. I dreamed that I couldn't save one box, but did save the other two boxes full of chickens. When I woke up this morning, my first comment to my husband was that "I dreamed of murder and mayhem!" I must have somehow known thru my subconscious that something had happened!

Anyway, guess I need to go get some new chickens!

oh man, ugh........  yeeeehaw!  you're the perfect person for bringing back SQ NN in big numbers!  LF only or bantams too?  what colors?

No bantams sorry, only large

I have white, red and my blacks need a little more work so that I can breed them true,

I also have splash and BLR

So do you think that your flock "learned" that they should spend the night in the inner sanctum ?

I know last night was the first night ever that they didn't go back to the coop after free ranging for the day! We called and called them and some of them came back for a treat, but we had to go search for 8 of them. Found them in all sorts of trees and bushes and ledges! They did not want to go back to their roosts in the coop! Poor babies! They have never done that before. Wonder how long those awful memories will last!

I want to thank you for the help. Here is an update on our girl. We kept her in a large dog crate in the house since it happened. at night we brought in the other NN pullet we have to sleep with her. then in the am we put her back outside with the flock. We kept the boo boo pullet inside all day away from the others. The first 3 days I applied antibiotic ointment to the wound and let it dry. (Can't believe she did not flinch) The rest of the time I just made sure it was clean and dry with no signs of infection. Now the question is, when and how do I get her back into the flock? I think she wants to start laying too. from the sound she has started making. Here are a few pics from this morning.

Can you make her a snap on "necklace" about 2-3" wide of fannel to put on her neck for a while? A lot of chickens wear saddles and diapers, so maybe she wouldn't mind a fannel or other soft "necklace collar" to cover that area?
