Naked Neck/Turken Thread

One more phone pic, taken a couple days ago. Please excuse the trashy yard...it's since been cleaned up!

I have 18 new turken babies (and 7 new dark cornish babies).. they arrived at the post office this morning right on time even though we are having a winter storm.. lol.. Texas isn't used to all this cold and ice!

pick will be coming in a bit... as soon as my new phone gets here...
Maybe I missed it but were you able to pick up your chicks in the ice storm? Hope everyone arrived safely.

I like those NN. have you crossed any of your BA's with NN? I have some BA hens that I was thinking would look good with Ed my NN rooster.
Thanks and yes I do...on a very regular basis. There are about 85 birds in this group and are fenced into roughly 3 acres with poultry netting. They are strung around, looking for stuff to get into and many of them show the Australorp influence.

This cockerel is in just about every pic I get because he has decided that he's the boss of me and does not trust me with his gals. He's the kind of cockerel I want looking after the hens, not just because he's so protective but also because I like what I see in hes conformation (at this point) and I know how he's bred....for production.

He's a very good looking rooster. Makes me excited to see what I may get this spring especially with the BA's and the EE's and Ed.

Two eggs in 1 day: different nest box different looks as well, one was Tan pale more on white side then brown, other one was Brown.... scrambled them with Rice and Oats for chickens Pm treat.

In Coop with others same feed and water same temp, did notice she has small cut on web of foot stagers when walking can not jump up.

IDEAS Anyone ?

~~ Kassaundra, how old would you guess them to be ? they have feathers on top and body is down like fuzz. I'm thinking a few weeks old. as these are my 2nd set of Chicks with Mom I defer to your and others NN knowledge. I'm not sure about near death, they were Bones with feathers true. they all appeared un ill " moving around - clear eyes no discharge - stool normal enough - chirping " no obvious signs of injury. ( THO as I recall there is this Reoccurring un disciplined child, left to grab what ever small animal that's within reach. ) How long after say ...... getting Squished, "if your sensitive " being held in little hand HARD !would it take to show symptoms ?

Even if not overtly outwardly sick, these chickens in the best case sererio were seriously underfed and based on the bottom pic kept in dirty conditions. Then brought to an auction type environment (in itself can stress even healthy birds) but not just the stress of the auction environment but also exposed to whatever conditions were being carried by the other birds there or they outright had. Your birds immune system were weakened already and might not be able to cope w/ both the stress and the exposure to whatever at the auction, and not to mention whatever they were exposed to where they came from, if they weren't fed properly I can't imagine there was any good husbandry of these birds or any other birds they had.

As to crush (squeeze) type injuries I would think any injury enough to mortally harm the bird would be evident at the most w/in a few days..

Staggard walking can be anything from injury, to weakness from parasites, to infection, to mareks and anything in between Trying to diagnose a bird by symptoms gets tricky since so many sx are the same for a bunch of different things. I am not a good source on treating sick or unhealthy birds since in my flock survival of the fittest applies, all sick or weak birds in my flock get the same "treatment" culling.

As to age it is hard to tell from the pics, they have all their feathers so over 5 weeks for sure, they still have a lot of "chick" patterning on their feathers so I would say under 10 weeks, but the under fed condition could affect that.

Oh and totally agree that fermented feed would do nothing but help.
