Are Turkens cold hardy? I live in the Midwest, and wanted to get some.
In truth, I live in an area of West Virginia that is the coldest spot in the nation on almost 100 days of the year and this past winter didn't disappoint, with some night time temps reaching negative 35F, actual reading...never mind the wind chill! I use no heat lamps nor other hearing devices. That's often the kiss of death because the birds get used to the added warmth and suddenly there's a power outage. Even for a few hours, serious damage will be done to the birds.

Like any breed, they require good housing with ventilation and needs to be pretty much draft-free. They also require good quality feed and plenty of good clean water, year 'round. Watering once per day is not sufficient during serious cold snaps and in fact, good husbandry dictates fresh water on a regular basis all year long.

They are good to excellent layers of medium to large eggs if you get them from a good hatchery. Mine do very well because I have bred for production for years...(not a sales pitch...none for sale and no eggs).

Good luck if you try them...My OPINION...Stay away from Murray McMurray.

My FIL who did not want any "ugly NN" but really wanted chickens so took the few I had, now wants to replace his feather necked rooster w/ a NN roo. lol lol lol
