That's definitely a rose comb and he's lacking the pea comb gene which is why his comb and wattles seem so big- no pea comb to reduce 'em.

Yes.

There are brown/red/gold genes that don't let silver affect it so totally, resulting in silver birds that show brown coloring to varying degrees like that hen. This is an area I don't know much about.. I can recognize when it's present, but not the 'whys'. My guess is it's because of genes that tell the feathers to put much more brown pigment than normal like BLR, dark cornish etc. basically a battle between silver trying to stop browns from being made, with those other genes trying their hardest to make and pour it into the feathers.

I know that hen has silver because of the white areas on her breast and little things like pale areas on some feathers on her saddle area, if she didn't have silver, those areas would be all buff.

First one seems to be basically a normal wheaten- can't tell due to flash if she's also silver or not.

Second one is a black tailed buff, but often simply called buffs but then show buffs usually are completely buff like buff orps so that's a little confusing.. if you say black tailed buff, everybody would know exactly what you're talking about. I have no idea what causes the random black feathers, also had it show up on a few hens from hatchery stock.. thought it was striking also but never worked with it to see how it's inherited.

Got these NN girls can yall tell me what color/type they are ? This is the first time I have had NNs don't know much about this breed.

no did not breed him and he has old english game bantam in him and am thinking of breeding him to get more like him

Wow, that's gigantic comb for that kind of mix. Thought Jap was a possibilty due to that comb size as combs can get large on Jap roos.

Yea he needs to be bred to continue a line of birds like him. Thinking of serama hens too? people have occasionally asked about breeding NN with seramas on here and elsewhere, he seems small enough to breed with them naturally.

Birdmaniac3000, that little rooster has an amazing set of head furniture and lovely tail feathers.....his offspring will be a joy to see.

I'm wondering what kind of offspring this little girl will produce?


As we had bright sunlight (probably will be the only day in the year!) the feather colour is a bit 'bleached' in the pic. They are cream to light bluish with an orange/brown border and she has a 'ginger' mullet....hence called "Ginger". Eyes greenish with some black and grey tail splashes.Comb tiny, but appears single. Any ideas?

Thanks Kev! Darby is something special! Is there any reason to think (because his comb is rose and not pea) that the blue egg gene somehow skipped him? He almost has to carry it --- he hatched from a green egg and his female siblings / half sibs lay green-blue eggs.

Very pretty, PG!!! I was getting some girls colored like that and I called them 'ginger splash', for lack of a better name. I *think* mine were from using a buff way back and it just pops out once in a while. I never used any of them for breeding, so no clue what the offspring would look like.

OK, so my poor little 4 week old BB (stands for Bare Bottom) has been out in the garage (under a light) with her hatch mates. BB was born with only feathers on her wings and a strip down her back. All the other regular feathered NNs are doing fine, but she appeared to be really cold. She was trying to get under anyone she could....so I brought her inside and put her back in the brooder with 2 - 1 week old EEs. She is in absolute heaven being back in the warmer brooder. And all three are suggeling together like family. So, here is my question...does anyone have a pattern for an outfit that will keep her belly and back warm? I have some fleece. I think I will just make some kind of slip on that will have velcro fasteners. Poor little thing.... any suggestions?
