Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Pheonix chicks have a chipmunk stripe and racoon eyes. I bred a Pheonix Roo to my NN hens to see what we got. SO far there are 2 naked necks and both have chipmunk stripe with racoon eyes

I'm not sure I understand, Kev. Those two came from black x black or black x barred?
Thanks!

Meant to say they are simply Bsd(sex dilution gene) on an otherwise plain black chicken, the visual difference in those birds is purely due to the Bsd gene- nothing else added to 'enhance' the difference between the roo and hen. The sexual difference is much, much more dramatic than in "regular" cuckoo/barred- as in this gene might be more useful for auto-sexing purposes. That roo is pure for Bsd, that's why he is so white and male chicks hatch out grey/white colored- the difference is obvious even before the chicks dry out. btw, not pure Bsd boys look same as the hen pictured above.

Can't remember at the moment if Bsd is a mutation of the regular barring gene or a 'new mutation' that happens to be located at the same gene location as barring.

yes but important the line is *pure* for barring as not pure barred males will be as 'dark' as females.

lines with Bsd- sex linked dilution are way easy for sexable chicks. I had some show up from crosses to show stock naked necks. Pictures added below, they were pure for black with only Bsd added. if pure bred, they would definitely be auto-sexing.

Barred NN have Bsd and not B barring, is that what you're saying? I'm new to poultry genetics.

I am supposed to pick up my baby LF turkens today. 23 little baby fuzz butts! I am excited to see them, had a friend hatch them for me.

Thanks ellymay. If he is part copper maran could the hens he is producing lay dark eggs if they are half silkie? Is that possible? Now that I have my naked neck (silkie showgirls) I don't think I am going to breed him anymore. I just was hoping to get some insight with the genes. I bought him from a breeder out of state and all that she told me was he was a project bird because she was hoping to use him to produce showgirls. I should of asked but I was just getting into chickens then and didn't think to ask. But It worked, He gave me to silkie feathered showgirls.

He could carry the dark egg gene if he was hatched himself from a dark egg.  Does he have feathered shanks?

Yes he has feathered shanks. What could that mean?

Awe congrats AutumnWinds!

My first time having them and they are just too sweet! Mine are only a few weeks old. Thank you Nava!
Got a NaNa in there too!!

Now..having said that I am just really struggling with what they are though...I know she said she sent me red, blr and 1 splash...I just can't figure out which ones are red and which are blr! O...and not sure why...but I just have this UGH feeling that the majority of them are cockerals!! Here's some pics...opinions please!! O and Nava might be able to just point them right out..dunno! I know they're young yet to be trying to figure sex but so many seem to have more comb, getting red necks and legs are thicker than a couple of the ones I'm guessing are pullets.. One more thing...noticed that in addition to the splash having dark/greenish legs...two of them that look sooo similar 1 has yellow legs and 1 has green legs.

So..here goes...O and my always nosy dog Woody!! lol

This pic below I was trying to show how eventhough splash it just recently popped out a couple of redish feathers...hmmm?!

Pic above and below are 2 chicks that have very similar feathering type however above...yellow legs...below greenish legs..

My beautiful boy Woody! He is such the protector of HIS chickens! I've had family show up one day and he had one of the BCM hens (4mos old..not small) in his mouth carrying her around outside...she was soaked but not a place on her..of course they told him to drop her and he did! I had a dog barreling after me too from the otherside of a tree line while I was carrying a dead chicken that something had dug up overnight and my dog came running from the other side of the house and attacked that dog and ran him off of our property! Big chow mix dog too! Just love him! Baby bunnies...baby chicks .. he licks them to "death"!! LOL

Yes he has feathered shanks. What could that mean?
Well...with his coloring and feathered shanks I would lean toward BCM mix. Go take a look at some BCM Roos and compare them...see what you think since you have a much better close up to make that comparison. I have a black silkie mix and BCM roo and he is very small but has the copper and Very feathered shanks from the mix..
