Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Okay, another question that I get mixed reviews on - do you have to breed the same colors together? How big of a deal is that, really? Can't I just get 2 roosters and 4-6 hens and there you go? For example; if I get a black roo, can't I breed it to a black, red, white, partridge, barred, etc...? And maybe a white or buff roo to breed to red, white, and buff? I mean, cuz I just do NOT have the space to have 1 rooster of every single color, but yet, I'd like a varitey of colors. I thought I could get a nice variety of hens and only 2 roos and just keep all of them in an enclosure together.

Same w/my other breeds I want. If I don't want a bunch of 'barnyard mixes', then I'm going to have to keep a seperate run for each color of each breed? Good grief! I'll have 15-20 runs! LMAO!!

If you want to show, or sell showable chickens, or have pure colored offspring you will have to seperate at least when you are collecting the eggs for hatching. I LOVE mixes have no inclination to show or breed seriously so mine all mix together all the time. When I look at my chicken yard I want to see individuals, not a sea of the same looking bird. I say it is like gardening style, some like rose gardens and some like wild flower fields, neither one is better or wrong just a different asthetic.

Cool chick! Is there a movement starting to introudce NN into seramas? I'd guess male for this one... breed it with small seramas! ;)
Hi all you peeps, I am new to NN's and hatched a NN / SERAMA chick 4 weeks ago...I am pretty sure of the sex BUT I wanted your expert opinion. This was an OOPSIE hatch, I thought for sure it was a serama hens egg...OH well, the little fart is too cute for its own good anyhow..LOL

Froggie, I'd say cockerel. That's a cute combo. You going to enter him in the TT show? I'd LOVE to see that!! Kaussandra, you take some awesome pictures! Kev, you were a flash at the meet up. What did you take home? I've got a lot of catching up to do on this thread. It's become so active!

Here's my newest addition, sitting under it's broody Showgirl mama. I'm pretty sure it's from the splash frizzled hen in the pen, looks just like her.

Too cute! That's out of birds from Lisa and me?

Brought home a few legbar chicks.. didn't get much as I got there so late. It was an adventure on that dirt road leading up to their place huh?

LIsa- it was a regular BYC meet up. I wore a shirt with a big red NN hen on it. A NN meet up would be so much fun.....

The 'barring' on your chicks is just the baby feather expression of the Pencilling gene. On your babies it will disappear when they molt again and seems most will become mostly solid color body like some of the parents. But this chick below seems like it's going to be wheaten or is wheaten mixed with maybe partridge or red duckwing. She will keep a fair amount of striping on her back as adult.
Need some opinions on what is going on here... I am going to post pics of my parents and the babies they are throwing. I like the colors, etc... just kinda confused.

Duh, was concentrating on feathers... forgot to get little faces to see if boys or girls......

Sorry, I really stink at taking pics.

Haha I think this one is basically a result of the 'telephone game'. Someone in Israel developed a line of Scaleless broilers. Many of the pictures on the net are of his stock. I'm guessing someone read about them and it led to assuming they were result of mixing NN with broilers.

Oldtimers sure liked having fun with the little 'uns! I was told about salt on a turkey's tail.

You might enjoy this Kassaundra, (a message posted elsewhere) :
"anyone want to give me a naked neck chicken??? apparently if you breed a naked neck chicken with a broiler chicken you are supposed to get a naked chicken and i want to see if its true."
Where do these ideas come from????

Cool I was wondering about that w/ my chickie doos, so many have what looks like barring and I was confused b/c I have no barred birds at all male or female, I had not got around to asking yet, but was going to.

Do turkens go broody a lot??

It depends- barnyard mixes can be very broody. The hatchery stock usually lay lots and lots of eggs before they go broody.

I've used both as setters for peafowl eggs... usually had to wait a bit on the big girls but they cover a lot more peaeggs and are always great setters and mothers.
