Naked Neck/Turken Thread

These are only a few of the colors i have, im glad to announce that my third generation BLRNN are very much liked by me, they actually look like them but with a NN

Ill post some pics when I get around to it this weekend.

I have NN in the following colors
White,red,black,blue,splash,BLR and pink jejeje

What color are the top 2?
What is BLRNN?
What is pink jejeje?

yes his sternum was slightly showing without handling. His neck was very red which we figured was sunburn I even started putting sun screen on him. He had a large single comb. I email cackle and they said they have not had a blue hatch from their NN pen. I think I'm just going to try and cross them myself lol I just loved his body type it made him look so macho

Haha it's not sun burn, it's partly a normal reaction to sunlight on chicken skin- much like how the faces combs and wattles turn red on any breed of chicken. Deep strong red is also indicator of very healthy rooster, so he was a very healthy strong fellow.

The naked neck gene does not follow sex, so it doesn't matter which sex has the trait but you do need at least one parent showing the naked neck to get any naked necked chicks. It's a dominant gene so if a chick doesn't show the naked neck it 'completely lost' the gene- doesn't 'carry' it in any way.

If you really want big very heavy birds, try to find large fowl cornish from show stock. These are much much bigger than any cornish from hatchery, like three times as heavy and broad. It might be easier to breed NN roo over cornish hens like these (or cornish X if you manage to find any that live long enough to lay eggs- be aware these are hungry hippos......) as the roosters can be so broad and so short legged they have trouble breeding hens naturally however any LF roo would be able to breed them just fine.

Shes an heirloom so to speak my grandfather always had them and he has been gone a little over 10 years now and she is one from his line im very proud of her

Aw that's really special. Any other pictures of them? Roos?

I do regret not breeding from the first turken hen, she was so big, heavy and laid gigantic eggs- could not close egg cartons over her eggs. Had assumed that was a typical turken trait so didn't find out how good she was until it was too late.

Oh - forgot to mention - I have a good quality pen of turkens..... black & buff

Pictures, pretty please? :)

frizzle turkens is very easy, just cross any frizzled bird with any naked necked bird. Frizzled, naked necked birds will result right from the first cross. You already have turkens and frizzled cochins, so you're already well ahead on that path.

if you want birds like regular turkens (clean legs, right color etc) with frizzled feathers it's a slight challenge but do-able by doing first cross with your frizzled cochins then breeding the frizzled birds closest to the turken type back to pure turkens, repeat that each generation until happy with the results.

i have a naked neck hen that had chicks ,but some of the chicks were not naked necks when the non naked necks get old enough to have chicks and are not bread to another naked neck. will some of the chicks get the naked necks gene from their grandma
