Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Got a new showgirl today.

I was too impatient to wait for my silkies and nns to hatch their own. :p Couldn't get good photos of her, though, as apparently I was boring her and she kept going to sleep on me..

By the way..
I posted two chicks about 10 pages back wondering about their gender. They're now roughly, ah, 8ish weeks old and I wanted to check in again.
The black is definitely a roo?

The white/splash/thing lol I'm not as sure of. The comb is still big and red, and the face is completely red. But the comb isn't AS big or pronounced as the blacks, and the wattles aren't AS big.. He/she and the black are the same size body-wise. Any guesses? Still possibly pullet? Or definite roo? This one is soo skittish.

Cockerels. My pullets are 13 weeks and the barely have a comb, just a few tiny spikes.

So envious of your birds, Dipsy! Love Little Miss Photobomber in the bottom of that first pic. LOL.
And thanks, guys! I suspected roos, but was trying to convince myself otherwise so one wouldn't have to go. :p

I have a question, as some of you know, I received eggs from Dipsy that had been seriously mishandled by the post office before I got them. (By no means Dipsy's fault, the eggs were package extremely well.) I went ahead and left the broken air cell eggs in just to see what would happen. When I candeled this morning for lockdown, 3 of the broken air cell eggs show movement. On those 3 eggs, the air cell dips deeply down on one side of the egg and about half way down the other side of the egg. Any chance that these eggs will hatch or will they run out of room first?

Lisa, I am so excited! Can't wait!!!

Dipsy.
Do you have pics of your black skin turken and reg roos?
My first gen blackskins are very variable. My oldest non NN roo is getting very red in the head but my next batch NN roo is staying dark sorta purple. I have another roo from the 3rd batch that is very black wadals and crest looking like a cemani right now. I will have to breed a few more generations to get closer to what I want. I think we are on a similar journey big, black, black skin, turkens and normals. I like tall upright birds with het.pea combs and pea combs with almost no waddles in mine

So Marty is going to be even more naked? Any suggestions on how to handle the aggression of the other roo when they are combined this week-end? Now mind you they were all together before not sure for how long but there are now 5 more hens in the mix for a total of 7 for 2 roos.

All that being said I have come to the conclusion that most birds are mean I watch mine and they can be hateful but since Marty got into the mix the attitudes have calmed way down. Which surprised me since I had read that peace among hens existed until you tossed a roo into the mix. So this theory for me is not right my NN Marty put the girls in their places.

Ranking is pretty important in most social animals. The ways they use to decide and maintain ranking does seem very mean to us.

Pretty much just have to let them fight it out to get all the rank settled.. best to let them fight it out on free range if you let them out that way the loser will be able to escape. As long as there's no blood it's normal fight. For a bit after a fight, the winner will be bit obnoxious about reminding the loser about the status but after a while it will become stable and at most the signs will be a bop on the head if another gets too close at feeding time. However separating them and letting back together will mess up their rank chart and so there will be some fighting again, same with introducing new birds.

The new pictures of the other roo I am definitely seeing Game traits.. the thing about games is they naturally are much more excitable and "spirited"(nice word for 'aggressive') including the hens. When they fight, they fight much much harder than any of the usual backyard chicken. In mixes the spirit is not as strong but still can be stronger than non-game breeds so when they fight, they fight a little harder but not as extreme as pure games. Just letting you know so you're aware and don't think all roosters and chickens are so fighty and flighty like these. I suspect some of your hens have game blood in them also.

Unfortunately, one of your birds has scaly foot- the brown hen with the black roo. It's a mite that infests the skin on the legs. It's why her legs and toes are all bumpy and fat. Fortunately, it is easy to treat. Two main ways- regular applications of anything sticky/oily like vaseline, dog flea shampoo, even cooking sprays- this works by smothering the mites so they cannot breathe and die off. Will need to do this several times a week for two or three weeks. The other way is to get a dewormer that also works on mites like ivermectin(common brand name is Ivomec but it's way expensive, just look for generic ivermectin or any dewormer that uses it) either applied orally or topically. This one might be easier if you want to treat the entire flock- won't hurt them and is good idea anyways to deworm/demite new birds and if one has it, chances are the others do too. btw no need to panic or feed bad- it's VERY common and widespread.. almost every one in the fancy eventually comes across it or sees it somewhere.

Congrats on the showgirl! Looks like a nice one, so you're way ahead, generation wise. It's easy to get a naked neck with silky feathers, but another story to get one with good nice traits!

Having whole body shots of birds also helps in sexing.. but your birds are old enough to have plenty of roo pin feathers if male- look for actively growing feathers with a plastic looking sheath at bottom on their backs. If the feathers coming out those are really shiny and very sharp pointy ends, male.. if soft and same as body feather in shininess with rounded tips, not roo feather.
