Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I was just on Strombergs. The red and white bantam turkens were still there but shipping for adults will be very expensive. I did get a mostly black pullet from dunlap. She might lose the white flecks when she matures. I thought about ordering white turken eggs from Strombergs but I hate the thought of the price if something would go wrong with the incubation. I guess I'll just have to suck it up. I'd really like to work on blue bantam turkens. I think a good place to start would be blue Plymouth rocks and black australorp bantams, but I have trouble finding them as well. Blue OEG bantams are readily available, but I don't want to breed in attitude... I would make them smaller though. Thoughts?

Lots of OEGB have white in earlobes- extremely difficult to breed out after a cross. One of the problems with getting this out is sometimes it does not show up until the bird is one year of age. I know this from experience.... Also they have the issue of their tails shortening as they get older.

Barred rocks can work, would just need to breed with an non barred bird like your black pullet and the barring can be ditched in the second generation. Or first, using a black roo over a barred hen. Is your black pullet a birchen or are the white flecks on the wings?

Hatcheries like Stromberg's, most of them don't even keep the breeding stock and just source it from individuals. Have you checked out Duane Urch- Vamvakas mentions Stromberg's sources eggs from him anyways. He also ships chicks and maybe started birds too... expensive but you get to bypass egg and incubation troubles.

Don't forget to watch Larry the Cable Guy on "Only in America" on the History channel this Wednesday the 14th. He will be at Cackles Hatchery. Should be interesting.

I do not believe the opinion that in this whole big country of ours that there are "no legit NN high quality breeders" available, especially when the very next statements are identifing two sources preported to be high quality, right here in the U.S. even.
Lets be serious... If you ever been to chicken show/fair how many NN's you seen there? Perhaps 1-2 birds, if not any at all. Reason for this cause they not high demand birds in the U.S. To my knowledge no NN won a grand champions in a show in the US..

The Jerry Foley/Sterling Wyandotte's, the Reese Mohawk RIR's, the Bob Vaughn Jersey Giants, and others win the shows.

In past statements you said you have no reason to show NN chickens, but you hesitated...

I have absolutely no interest in showing any chicken (or any other animal for that matter) whether it be NN or not. Have never had any interest, have never said I had any interest in any cookie cutter type breeding where all the chickens look alike. I have nothing against those that do, I am a firm believer in whoever pays for the food can breed whatever they want, show, pet, food.

I was disagreeing w/ a very sweeping statement you made encompassing a huge nation saying there would be no "legit" breeders of show quality. I didn't believe it when you posted it, and don't believe it today. I will agree finding good show quality of any animal is harder then finding pet quality anything, there is big whole world out there breeding for their own enjoyment that do not go to shows for whatever reason, some breeding to a preset show standard others breeding to whatever goal they have in mind.

I do not understand your last statement.

A "huge nation" and people don't show NN's in US shows... Open your eyes and see it yourself if you think you know everything.
This will be my last post on this subject, but I am not the one making sweeping statements that encompass the whole country and what is or is not available in all corners and areas of it.

My black pullet has a few white tips in her chest and the few in her wings. The amount of white in her chest had greatly lessened so I hope it disappears completely with the molt. I found a post on here I think from last year where a person was selling all sorts of Turken bantams. I found his/her page on Fb and sent a message. I only show at my county fair and I know our judge does not like turkens so it's really just for the pleasure of raising a fairly unigue bird. I am considering ordering more bantam turkens from Dunlap next spring but who knows what I'll get. I'll look up the person you mentioned. Thanks
