Naked Neck/Turken Thread

sometimes sexing young NN gets confusing... it seems some girl NN grow big combs(usually no color) very early or some will show some red, especially when blushing. Some boy NN have very small combs for a long time. So with NN I try not to focus too much on the comb size or amount of red, looking at the overall bird. like are the legs also looking much thicker with longer toes, body looking heavier etc. Most of the time I just let them feather out and see if they show tell tale feather color patterns, that's more reliable.

aww, all of us would love to see your new babies. by the way welcome to the forum!

Yes the males have a redder neck but that only happens when they are old enough to have roo hormones(starts at several weeks old), and as full adults it is way obvious.

Color of little baby chicks doesn't have to do with sex... aside from very specific crosses like if you use a black and white hen with a red/black rooster, all of the black and white babies will be boys and the brown/black ones will be girls. This is because the Silver gene is a sex linked gene.. Silver gene makes the birds black and white instead of brown/black. Understand though, if the rooster is black and white, then this will not work for sexing the babies. So you can be sure from very specific crosses using specific colors.
how do you cross a silver dorking with a nn to get a nn to have a pattern like a silver dorking?

the chicks i am not sure how old they are they are getting there wing feathers so i am guessing maybe a week old?

The silver dorking color is a silver duck wing with no extra genes that mess with the patterning.

The easiest way would be to cross NN with a dorking then breed the NN offspring back to pure dorkings to 'clean out' all the unwanted extra genes. If you find or have a NN with exactly the color of a red duckwing, this would be excellent because this is the gold version of silver dorking color.

NN is a dominant gene, so have to use a naked neck parent to get any nn chicks. If the chick does not have a nn, it does not have the gene at all.. totally gone.

lol i feel like a newbie. i have no idea what duck wing means or is.

Not a problem :) Duckwing is the name of a basic pattern gene and got its name due to a colored patch on the wings of roosters.. as opposed to crow wing which is an all black wing, missing the colored patch.

Silver dorkings are duck wing patterned with the silver gene added to make them grey/white instead of brown and red. The white patch on wing feathers(on the big wing feathers, not the small feathers on the arm) is the "duckwing"

Silver duckwing pattern hen:

Red duckwing rooster- note the patch is red instead of white. This is due to only one reason- he does not have the Silver gene:

This is a crow wing rooster- note he does not have the colored patch on the wing feathers:

This is what a crow wing hen looks like to give an idea:

~ Hey, sorry for not being around much, either. I don't always have the time to check every group I've ever commented in every day. And sometimes if there's no activity or only, let say, up to 5 posts, I don't always check those ones. I go to the ones that have like 20-40 newer posts first so that I don't get so far behind. And then there's days I can just sit here for hours & get caught up on all of everything.....sipping my coffee....listening to the clicking of our dogs' toenails as they walk across the floor.... spacing out looking out the window at our Sebastopol geese splashing about in their swimming pool...feeling the gentle breeze from the ceiling fan on my skin.... and then I wake up and say OH Shoot! Back to reality! LOL!

~ Froggie - aww, sorry about Beep! Was that really her name? That's so cute! What made you decide to call her that?

~ Nava... wow! You let all those NN's go?? I only wish I had enough to be able to say that. I've only got a few NN's right now.

~ If anyone has any they want to sell, shoot me a PM. I'm desperate enough to order from the feed mill 1/2 hr away and I know they get their chicks from McMurray and Cackle at a cheaper price and pass them on. But it'll have to wait b/c I'd want to get them about the same time my eggs in the incubator start hatching out so I can put them all in the brooders together.

hey. I'm Back.. My comp crashed, then it was fairtime. Lol. What is the size of a fully grown NN hen? Cuz mine is a little small in like height, but she's hefty. i'd put her at around 5 pounds. & she has been laying eggs. This would be the red one.. the black one (Who hadn't done good from the start) died a few weeks ago...

The "moms" lost their first chick today, it was one of the NN w/ a small bow tie, not a Sc carrier and was going to be some form of red. Healthy and active just hours before, nice full crop (not over full) nice weight to the chick, I figure it was hurt in an accident Reba is a very active digger.

Ok, here's what I got to start my buff line

This pullet was born here, don't ask me who were the parents, she was just born.

But I'm thinking about putting her with my white nn. And go from there.

What do you guys think?
Almost a year old.
