Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hey y'all how's everyone coming along? I have a question for your expertise lol :) my big cockeral (head roo when he settles down) is having trouble mating. He don't catch them very often but when he does he can't get his area down far enough to do anything. It's like his legs are too long to mate with my Na girls. Should I get him some bigger females? Or is this an issue he will grow out of with a little more experience? Appreciate any advice I'm just starting to get worried because we really want him to mate! He's too pritty and nice not to!

Any thoughts on crossing Turken with White Faced Black Spanish to get birds with a naked neck and the oversized white earlobes of the WFBS? I have read that the white earlobes of the WFBS is a recessive trait. How about using a black pure turken hen and a male WFBS?

I'm not too familiar with genetics yet, but if it works, sounds like a fun cross!
I'd love to see a thread of NN crosses. :D
Oh, and :welcome!

White on earlobes is polygenetic(several different genes). I don't know the genetics for the white face, my guess is it's probably also polygenetic, rather than a simple dominant vs recessive single gene. Aside from the white face, possibly there are genes needed for ear lobe size so you want large white areas plus large earlobes- wonder if they are related though, as there don't seem to be any white faced chickens without large ear lobes..? It is possible to get large ear lobes and have the faces red though- show stock Minorcas have huge white ear lobes but their faces are supposed to be red(white creeping over apparently is sometimes a problem).

My guess- cross birds will have varying amounts of white in their ear lobes of mostly normal size. No white or very little in face. However, if you breed the cross birds together and/or breed back to WFS, there should be a few with white faces(more if bred back to WFS).

Results likely depends on if the WFS is 'good quality' or not.. WFS without the white faces or just a slight dusting of white on faces are pretty common, especially in hatchery stock. Would not expect any decent white faces if the WFS parent did not have a clearly white face.

WFS to black turken will give all black or black and black with some color leaking(especially on roosters). It's because not all blacks are genetically the same. If it happens to be the same gene and the turken side was bred to be pure black, no color leaks then all will be black. But if they were not selected for pure black, best to expect black chicks with some showing color later on.

If you do this project for a couple generations, you'll produce very colorful chickens! Black, white and red. p.s. any thoughts about adding black skin...? Black skin combined with white earlobes- bluish.... blue faced chickens..?
