Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm so envious of you all finding NN chickeedoos at feed stores! I never find anything more than your basic boring layers (Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, maybe EEs).

I have homegrown silkie/showgirl eggs going in the bator now, though, so hopefully over the next couple weeks I'll have some sg peeps. :fl

Nine new Naked Necks.

Here are 4 that was suppose to be Naked Necks. Guess my stock isn't pure fro the naked neck gene. No telling what all is in those birds, they came from a hatchery. I even got some that has peacombs and rosecombs. There is nothing in that run except for NN all with single combs. What's up with that? Oh well that is the fun working with birds, expect the unexpected. I still love my NN's though even if they are not perfect NN's. I'm going to hang onto these and watch them grow out, may have something in mind for them.

I ordered a dozen nn hatching eggs today! Mottled, blue and splash! I believe they ship out Monday. They are from the link I posted the other day! I'm so excited even though I'm a little worried about my first hatch, due to hatch Monday or tuesday.

It does make you wonder like I told someone the other day. The chicks that I have gotten from TSC before were suppose to be pure breds, however I had a GLW hen that was very tiny, and she laid white eggs. Luckily I don't have her any more, biut I guess that accidents do happen at the hatcheries. Someone told me that some naked necks do have rosecombs. I haven't seen one as of yet though.

We've never had a pea or rose comb but there's certainly nothing wrong with them...Many well respected breeders on this thread breed FOR them...I hope SOP breeders are allowed here because after more than 7 decades of breeding strictly for production, we are making a place for a SOP program.

Additionally, It's been pointed out to me ( gotta check it out) that birds shown in the US had better have a'bow-tie' or even an 'ASCOT'...

So enjoy the birds you got from the hatchery if you bought them for eggs. If you don't like the ROSE/WALNUT combs..plenty of people will buy them.

Good luck and have fun with the NNs of all description.

Really? The ASOP reads:
Neck: Medium in length; devoid of feathers, except for a permissible tuft at front of neck nearly half way down; skin very smooth.
; ) ASOP = American Standard of Perfection
I guess a judge may have a personal preference and that could influence how they mark a Naked Neck, but that is not how I interpret it.

Yes, I know that there are people that are breeding for those type combs. I was just point out that none of mine have anything but a single comb. I guess background breeding can and will show up.
Right now I am saving eggs from two hens both lay a green (one of them is and olive egg). One hen is Easter Egger/Naked Neck cross, the other one is Easter Egger/Production Red cross (this one has laid every day except for 3 or 4 days since she started laying about 4 weeks ago). Gonna see what comes of these crosses.

Very cute babies, intrigued by the brown ones.....

Rose comb is 'very dominant', not possible for it to be hidden or not noticed on any bird with it.

Pea comb is also dominant but appearance can vary considerably in mixed or not pure. One big tell tale sign is the wattles are much reduced or have a distinct look(shape, paper thin) compared to their single combed relatives. Some peas can pass for single, even having a few spikes or just a mostly upright blade.. at a glance they look single.

With two different comb types from all single comb flock, I would have guessed either there's been an egg mix up, somebody got bred by another breed and it's left over sperm, or at least one or two breeders are not single comb- can easily believe a pea being missed but rose comb, that's a too hard one to miss.. would have marked them as accidental crosses.
