Congrats on your new cuties!

I would guess Pickles is either crossed with Light Brahma or it's in the mix.   The color is called Columbian, although this same pattern is called Light in some breeds like brahmas.

Munk is basically a common color out of black crossed with any colored chicken. The closest name could be Birchen or Brown Red.

Thanks for the info. When do NN start laying - the same as other pullets? Is there anything I need to know about NN that is different from other pullets? Or do I treat them the same? They seem hotter than the other girls.

Treat them the same- I raise them exactly the same as anything else. What do you mean by hotter? Body temp or appeal?

Generally NN are pretty good layers however it depends if the line has been mixed with other breeds- will be early, great layers if mixed with layer breeds... slower if mixed with a slow maturing breed. Almost all hens will go broody- those from hatcheries tend to lay lots of eggs before finally going broody. The small-medium sized ones from backyarders tend to be very broody. They also normally make excellent mothers. Used them to hatch and raise baby peacocks...

LOL - no I meant body temperature. They just seem a lot hotter when I hold them than the other girls do but then again they have feathers on their necks. Someone said the Colombian colored one is probably crossed with Brahma cause she has some feathering on her legs.

Oops - guess that was you. Sorry. Anyway, I'm not familiar with the Brahmas, are they good layers?

My new icubator will be able to hatch 100 chicks a week!!

Quite a set-up! We just ordered ours that will hatch around 40 at a time. You must be planning Big Business.

When my Araucana Delilah went broody I purchased her some frizzle naked neck eggs. She hatched these 2 on Halloween. Lilith has both the nn & frizzle trates and Blair will look look a millie cochin.

I've read but never seen that animals, other than humans can suffer alopecia. I'm also thinking it could be a reaction to some sort of Rx or changes in feed. All breeds are not created the same nor seem to be succeptible to the same maladies, even in the same flock.

Alopecia, hhmmmm, never thought of that. It can't be a med reaction cause we don't use meds and they have been free ranged all their lives so maybe a bug or grass that doesn't agree with them. I sure wouldn't know about that.

No that's not normal, not even for NN. At least part of the damage on the back is due to excessive roo breeding, possibly combined with feather picking after the roo damage exposed the feathers.

It's a bit odd the feathers on lower breast and legs are reduced down to quills.. makes me wonder if they have the brittle kind of feathers found in Production Red lines. It seems a lot of hatcheries have their NN "mixed for color" and some of them seem to show red sex link or production red in their mix. Production reds are known for having more brittle feathers, prone to damage in full sunlight or normal breeding activities.

They should molt out normal.. broken feathers don't get replaced until they either are pulled out or molted out. So if a whole bunch of feathers are getting worn or broken down, the birds can end up looking like that until they finally molt.

Yes, the area over the wings are from breeding but I've never seen any feather picking happening. These are hatchery birds so who knows what they are breed with just as long as they have a necked neck. It sorta reminds me of double gene frizzled chicken that has the thin, brittle feathers, except these are NN's. I surely hope they grow some feathers back soon because winters coming and I don't want them to freeze. I feel so bad for them. If I knew how to crochete, perhaps I could make them a sweater for the really cold nights but I can't crochete. Does anyone sell sweaters for chickens that cover their top and bottom sides? It will be very interesting to see if they ever grow back in their normal feathers or if this is how they will be the rest of their lives.

That would be perfect!! Dang I wish I could crochete. I'm going to ask my step Mom if she knows how to crochete and can make me some and teach me!
