Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm not sure if I'll do the NYD hatchalong this year. I did it last year and due to a temp spike, my hatch that was on track for 100% yielded one chick. So then I had to try to hunt down newborn chicks in January which is not easy around here. I'll totally be doing the Easter hatchalong though!

Here's my NN rooster Bre. I thought he was a pullet thanks to that tiny comb until a couple days ago when he started trying to mount the pullets in the coop with him and some tiny saddle feathers appeared! He's living with my cemani hens right now until I have a good rooster for them. If he successfully fertilizes them, there will be cemani NN babies at my place. Of course, I'll be kicking him right out of that coop as soon as I have my Greenfire rooster to put over the hens.

That will be a great cross! I've wondered why so far no fibro breed has naked neck.. if the black skin is their main selling point, why not show it off, right? How about putting the GF roo over daughters out of this cross... that should throw some wonderful birds.

I think your roo might have a walnut comb?

Nice looking white rooster there. I haven't been able to find many different colored NN rooster locally. Most of what I find are barred or red barred with a few red thrown in.

I did find one that is blue copper.

NYD hatchalong... is that a group thing for setting eggs on NYD? That's a fun tradition. I couldn't do it- no incubator of my own. But am itching to set a whole bunch of eggs asap(getting tons right now) with a friend who cooks them up for me.. however am not about when, due to the holidays.

Well the nest of eggs the broody abandoned and I tried to save didn't make it. I opened them today to see what was inside. (outside incase of stinkers) 9 were fully formed and within 12 hours of internal pip from the looks of the yolk sacks. One was a scaleless non fm chick. So I would have had another Rudy. At least I know my genetics are solid now, there is no doubt both carriers in my flock that are breeding.

Yep, that's what it is! I won't do it this year though even though I have much better incubator because brooding young chicks that time of year is a fiasco in this climate. I do think I'll be putting my Greenfire cemani rooster over the hens from this cross. That should hopefully yield some gorgeous fibro naked necks. I have no clue what color eggs they'll lay because who knows what's in this rooster. He was a barnyard mix. His barred brother who is not a naked neck is clearly a silkie cross, with feathered legs, a crest, and extra toes. He's not as big as Bre because of the silkie, but Bre may well be half silkie with that comb. He has no other silkie traits though so who really knows!

Kev welcome back after your sabbatical ?

well I am slowly working on my mixed up flock. Below is a repeat photo of my rooster posted some time ago. After he developed, he basically crowed non-stop. On the half hour starting at 01:30 ugh so I tried the neck band which I read about somewhere on here. The first one fell off because I used the sticky type of velcro on the one inch elastic. Next I sewed the velcro on and used two pieces of elastic. I am not sure if two inches are needed but I can not hear him at all now. And I am very pleased. I'll try to get another better picture but he will not come near me. ha ha I like it that way !

He keeps his neck tucked in whenever I bring my camera on the scene.

My cockerel is 17 weeks old and is not showing any signs of wanting to crow or get busy with the hens. Based on that I don't see a NN hatchalong in the near future for me. LOL My main rooster is injured and is now living in the house until he is healed, so I was hoping the NN would step up and turn into a rooster. I'll keep waiting. ;)

So he's a fun puzzle eh! Rose and pea are dominant so if there's no other birds with either.....

Thanks for the info and would love updates on your project.

Hey thanks flower! It seems there are a few on sabbaticals.... Lisa(DDD), Nava, others....?

Good to know the collar works on NN- had wondered if it worked on them. So if someone asks about it for their NN you're the expert!
