Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm so new to NNs that I don't even have any yet. (I don't have ANY chickens yet.) I thought I had the breeds we wanted all decided on and have been waiting on a couple of people to hatch some eggs. Then last weekend I was wandering around the farm store and saw turken chicks for the first time. Overboard! I immediately started asking around on the KS board and found 4 hens and a roo for sale! Since we are just in the process of getting our chicken house and run set up we won't get them until (hopefully) Easter weekend. I'm extremely excited, if that's not obvious. I've been across the internet a couple of times. All the information I've found so far seems to be repetitious, so I'm at least hoping I can find some good conversation here. My two friends who have chickens think I'm crazy for wanting this breed. Thankfully my husband likes them too. I even sent pictures to my daughter who loves beautiful things and was excited we were going to get cute little baby chicks, to let her know the change of plans. I explained ahead of time that lots of people think they're ugly. She thought they were adorable also, so I guess our whole family is the right fit for them.

and especially to this thread! It really only matters what you, your husband and of course your daughter thinks about them. I don't believe you will be disappointed in them. They don't lay the biggest or the most eggs but they will stand the test of time compared to most other breeds.

Most NN's will lay a medium to large egg but what many don't realize is that the size of the egg is not as important as it's weight and if the birds are given good care, they will live a long productive life as well. In my opinion, they are the best breed out there, even if I do play around with crossing them for meat production.

If I could have only one breed, it would be the NN/Turken!!!

Good Luck

I'm with @hellbender on this one. I can't say enough good about this breed. Mine are nearly 10-weeks old now and I am completely in love with the breed. Even my husband is charmed by them as they are quick to show affection and are remarkably easy to manage. So glad you're joining the "fan club".

My turken has a great personality and I love him. I also love Marans. So, I am breeding Marans-turkens that will (hopefully) lay chocolate eggs. My first six eggs are due to hatch tomorrow. I will be setting more eggs next Friday with the hope of getting at least a half dozen pullets that are turken and lay chocolate eggs. That is the beauty of NNs...you can cross breed them and get the best of both worlds. :)

For the ones that have crossed green layers and brown Eggers.

Question: If a hen that came out if a green egg but had a daddy that came from a brown egg lays a brown egg, does that mean she doesn't carry the green egg gene, or just one copy of it?

If she does not lay green/blue eggs then she does not have the gene at all. Same as naked neck gene- don't see it, don't have it. Except no real way to tell if a rooster has it(the blue/green egg gene) though.. only way to know is through his daughters.

That was a wonderful read and hellbender gave a great answer. :)

My own introduction to the breed was via chick order from a hatchery company. I picked multiples of various breeds.. but chose only one 'turken'- a pullet, in case I did not like them and did not want a rooster making a mess out of the babies...

20+ years later, almost all of my chickens have naked necks lol (and kept none of the other breeds from that order!)

Looking forward to gaining enough experience to hold up my end of a conversation. Thanks for the welcome. You'll hear a shout from me when we get them home.
