Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm glad we do not have foxes where I live, but we do have a ton of coyotes so it's almost as bad.

I agree that if they are motivated enough they will climb the fence. I would invest in some type of cover. Temporary could be a tarp or bird netting or chicken wire. For the long term the run/coop should be covered with wire mesh fencing or a solid roof. That is one of the reasons I haven't built a new run yet...can't figure out how I will cover the top.

DC can be good... unless you get the really meaty/big ones like the show type, those do not tolerate the heat very well at all. "hatchery stock" do allright. edited- had both types btw.

How does he wobble his head? Is it like there's something annoying on his face? Many of the larger wattled(that also touches their neck) NN roos do kind of 'get this thing off my face' after drinking or eating something wet/messy. If he does it after drinking, that is probably it...

It's almost more of an emotional statement than an annoyance. Do you know how Indian dancers can move their head from side to side? It's a lot like that. When he's happy, excited, and sometimes preparing to crow he'll often do it, not just when he's got water droplet or food on his wattles. It's pretty funny to see, and I've seen the other boys do it occasionally, but not nearly as often as this guy. He's rather....flamboyant at times.

Generally, where you have coyotes, you will not find fox because they are on the coyote's menu...one of their favorite targets because one adult fox will feed a whole coyote litter. Most fox that are caught by coyotes are males, in search of new territory...usually young that haven't come to fully understand that his bigger cousin can our run and more importantly, out-smart them.

Educated opinion...based on many years of hunting and observation of wild animals.

My OLDER son suggests you name him TURK...but he says that with much love for his younger brother...Absolutely NO homophobia in this household...that's why we can joke about it. When we're in Lexington, and then to Louisville, we go to bars/lounges that cater to gay folks. Even as ugly and old as I am, I get more hits from guys than I ever get from women but it just isn't my calling...

The babies are 2 weeks old today, and were low on space, so since it was a weighing day anyway, I expanded their coop at the same time. Side note - cardboard panels for brooders are BRILLIANT - because I can expand easily (I have a cardboard and plastic set on hand, and combined them for more space), and because I can block off part with the chicks in it, I can just take the end of the other part down to clean it out - super easy. I did the weighing - 4 escaped into the other "finished weighing" half of the brooder while I was sorting/weighing (all New Hampshires), so they missed their weights this morning (I'll try to get them when they're sleepy tonight if I can pick them out from the others).

Anyway, I have one Naked Neck boy (NN phenotype, clearly male to my eye) who is a TANK! He is 6.5 oz (0.4 lbs) at 2 weeks old! It was like lifting a brick, I swear, and he almost beat his way out of my hands... He's almost twice the size of the littlest ones, and a full ounce heavier than the second largest chick (another Nn male). My question is - he's starting to turn red in the face - I saw a red spot by his ear last night, but thought it was a boo-boo. Now it's his whole face. I just wanted to double check if this is normal/expected in Naked Necks, vs. some sort of lesion/rash. (The next largest one is just starting to have this as well, barely.)

If I keep him, which I very well may with his size and NN status, his name will be... Tank (or maybe Brick).

Haha that might be what I see on some roosters and is normal... and yes it looks funny. ;)

btw Indian head movement is a GREAT way to describe it!

My DC's fall somewhere in between the extremes. I have 11 pullets (4 months old) and they are quite hefty, with a couple of somewhat smaller ones but even they are much heavier than they appear. I won't get rid of these but will not use any but the larger pullets for breeding.

I thought I had a couple cockerels in this batch but alas...not.

Ah, that's too bad.. are you hoping to get a roo later or go the cross route for these?

The ones I got from hatchery years ago were not much more than basically a heavy Asil. Crosses with Araucanas actually turned out much meatier and heavier than these. Seems they have increased their size since then or it was a particular line I got.

Very normal. By the way I've also seen pullets get really red like that. I'd say you're probably right though if ? He ? Is a he by being built the way you described.

LOL! No homophobia here either....but he's already named Heisenberg. I guess we'll just have to reserve the name "Turk" for one of his off-spring.

I know I've posted these before, but this is the guy I've been talking about. Love my Heisenberg! His comb and wattles are even bigger than in these photos as these were taken a few months ago.
