Naked Neck/Turken Thread

The babies are 2 weeks old today, and were low on space, so since it was a weighing day anyway, I expanded their coop at the same time. Side note - cardboard panels for brooders are BRILLIANT - because I can expand easily (I have a cardboard and plastic set on hand, and combined them for more space), and because I can block off part with the chicks in it, I can just take the end of the other part down to clean it out - super easy. I did the weighing - 4 escaped into the other "finished weighing" half of the brooder while I was sorting/weighing (all New Hampshires), so they missed their weights this morning (I'll try to get them when they're sleepy tonight if I can pick them out from the others).

Anyway, I have one Naked Neck boy (NN phenotype, clearly male to my eye) who is a TANK! He is 6.5 oz (0.4 lbs) at 2 weeks old! It was like lifting a brick, I swear, and he almost beat his way out of my hands... He's almost twice the size of the littlest ones, and a full ounce heavier than the second largest chick (another Nn male). My question is - he's starting to turn red in the face - I saw a red spot by his ear last night, but thought it was a boo-boo. Now it's his whole face. I just wanted to double check if this is normal/expected in Naked Necks, vs. some sort of lesion/rash. (The next largest one is just starting to have this as well, barely.)



If I keep him, which I very well may with his size and NN status, his name will be... Tank (or maybe Brick).

LOL! I remember how very freaked out I was when my NN checks started showing the red around their ears. I was convinced I had done something terribly wrong to make them unhealthy and would lose the whole flock. I guess that's one of the most obvious reality checks with this breed....you see everything, whereas fully feathered breeds hide everything. I think I've learned more about chickens from this breed than from all of my other birds combines. And as you've thankfully already been told, it is completely normal. Looks like a lovely little chick there! I think you should name him "Tiny".

Ah, that's too bad.. are you hoping to get a roo later or go the cross route for these?


The ones I got from hatchery years ago were not much more than basically a heavy Asil. Crosses with Araucanas actually turned out much meatier and heavier than these. Seems they have increased their size since then or it was a particular line I got.

A friend, just south of me has some young cockerels and has promised to let me come and pick out a couple for a small fee which I will do, after I get back from a short trip next month. I will keep a pure line of the DC but my primary goal is to cross the NNs over them.

LOL! No homophobia here either....but he's already named Heisenberg. I guess we'll just have to reserve the name "Turk" for one of his off-spring.

I know I've posted these before, but this is the guy I've been talking about. Love my Heisenberg! His comb and wattles are even bigger than in these photos as these were taken a few months ago.

You might save the combs and even the wattles to braise...??? In fact, I like to eat the combs but never tried the wattles but they seem so large, it would seem a shame to waste them if you have such large ones...lol

I fully intend to have rose or pea combed NNs in the not so distant future, except for a select group that will be bred specifically as near to 'pure[ as I can keep them.

This will be the sire of my next round of Naked Neck chicks:

This is Mister Bo Spangles.

He is an Aloha, I'm going to use him to sire some mottled carriers for my Calico Naked Neck program.

I'm using him along with a red rooster that has some light mottling on him and also a Red pea comb rooster that is NN (1/2) with 1/4 each if Easter Egger ( used for the pea comb) and Production Red ( for egg production).

The Pea combed rooster will be used on a few 1/2 sisters of his.

This is my Mottled Partridge hen.

And these are five if their six babies that hatched last week. 17th and 18th of September.

There are five of them that are showing big white spots on them already, so hopeful they'll be mottled. I do know that they are going to be partridge colored base though.

Had to take a break from moving chickens around.... got stung by a red Harvester ant.. they Hurt shockingly bad! The initial shooting burning pain is over but now the sting location is throbbing with hot flashes. I can bear it out but wondering if there's some kind of remedy besides pain pill and bendaryl...?

That rooster came from my flock. Sold some to someone then they bred them and boyght this fellow back.

The hen will be four this coming spring do I'm trying to get everything I can from her. After the January hatch ( I'll be doing the annual New Years Hatch A Long), I may try her with Mister Bo Spangles.
