Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I am resting a horrible headache, and doing neuro checks on myself. I was helping my husband w/ an outbuilding he is building and a rafter dropped on my head. It didn't knock me out, but I saw stars.

Yes, but I was able to get two chicks so she wouldn't be alone.  Poco (here on byc and a near 30 mile neighbor) had a batch to hatch the same week, she was kind enough to share.

Great!

Not so great. Get better fast!

My almost 4 week olds ( tomorrow) the totals aren't looking so good. This hatch I only kept the ones that were naked necked. Originally kept 46, lost two, left with 44. Culled nine definite cockerels last week.

Just went through the 35 that is left checking leg bands. While I was doing that did a sex check. It don't look so good.

With the exception if three maybe four that I went and sexed as cockerels ( I saying maybe pullet, need to wait one more week to know for sure).
Pullets= 18
Cockerels = 17. Of I was wrong on the three or four then still at least 13/14 add those to the 9 already culled that were cockerels. Looks like the cockerels out hatched the pullets. Of course the 43 I sold I don't have any ideal the sex of those, still I think the cockerels are the "winners" this time. Could have been worse I guess.

I was so wanting a lot if pullets this time, I'm still not going to be ahead on hens much this time, lost too many to the predators.

Down to 13 that are laying age to any day now layers. 8 up and coming pullets that are 19 weeks old.

Oh well , I guess I shouldn't complain too much, there are those, some in here, that have lost more than me and done who have list everything to predators.

Thanks for listening.

My sympathies!! A hammer fell right on my head- same thing, did not get knocked out and saw stars too.. didnt have headache, was a very sore and swollen spot on head for me... but was feeling very strange, not quite myself or something for several days after.

Glad you are far better informed and prepared to look after yourself than I am.. in hindsight I really should have went to get my head checked out lol

It is such a tough call w/ hitting your head, it is multiple thousands of dollars if you go to the er, but the hit doesn't have to be "catastrophic" to be deadly. I kept a very close watch and would have gone no matter the cost if I had seen anything at all for escalating s/sx. I will avoid asa and nsaids, and wine for a week or so just incase.

Smart lady. (As if there were any doubts.) I have a lot of empathy for anyone with a head injury. My last one left me with irreparable damage and headaches every day for 25 years. You're VERY smart to get checked out after something like this. Heal quickly! I hope the pain goes away very soon.

Mama and chick spent their first day with the flock (chick is 3 1/2 weeks old). I know she has a hard time protecting him because of her age and rank in the flock. He was not happy this evening when I got home and fussed and hollered until she took him to bed! I think they got separated more than a few times and he found it quite stressful. They're in my front garden right now and have quite a bit of room and lot's of hiding places so he'll be fine as he learned his way around. Definitely a mama's boy though. And she is doing such a good job for a pullet - so much fun to see!

Yeah, for sure... two factors in me not going in were due to being home alone- felt it was not the best thing to drive myself to er/uc and was very poor during that time.. no extra cash for anything at all so the thought of having to go in was extremely stressful.

Hubby better be treating you like royalty. ;)
