Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Gotcha. I like variety too. You'll have fun with the chicks and seeing what colors they grow into. Easier to do this chart: Large bowtie x LB= 1/4 fuzzies(no naked neck) 1/2 LB and 1/4 small bowties. LB x Small bowtie= 1/2 LB. 1/2 SB SB x SB= 100% SB LB bred to any not naked neck.. any breed= 1/2 LB, 1/2 fuzzies. SB bred to not naked neck= 100% LB. The fuzzies are totally lacking the NN gene.. they do not "carry" it in any way. Even if they were out of two large bowtie parents. Yep! those smooth babies are mine. Has nothing to do with the NN gene, it's due to a separate mutation called scaleless... because they cannot grow scales on their legs either.
I'm in love I would love some eggs to hatch

Hi all! I haven't posted in here in a while, but I know some of you were interested in my ayam cemani NN project, so I thought I'd show you my half cemani NN cockerel named Bowtie. In the spring, I'll be putting him over some ayam cemani pullets not good enough for my ayam cemani pen but fine for use in a project such as this.

I love his coloring! The darker feathering on his cap reminds me of my black NN cockerel, but then he threw in a surprise with all that grey. Handsome fella!

I am COMPLETELY in lust with Ayam Cemanis - and your cross is lovely!!! What sort of coloring did the NN parent have? Please keep us posted on your project.

(I wish I could afford them...)

I agree they are awesome looking birds. I will never be able to afford them either, well at least until they are everywhere, so I have the "budget" version. Common (at least by AC standards) fibro birds keeping the darkest fibro from each generation.

His father was actually all white:

Well today was Check the Chicks day.
I was down to 34. I had been keeping up with the sexes of mine, I don't get quite into the weights and such like Fire Ant Hill.

Out if the 34 I had pegged 18 to 19 as pullets, one if those were a maybe, and it was a cockerel. They are 5 weeks old today and it us the time that you can really tell for sure. As always though there are still a few that can be either. The pea combs sometimes throw you off.

Okay back to the counts: there are 17 pullets left and 17 cockerels. So that being it was also cull day for the cockerels that didn't make the grade. 7 of them didn't make the grade.
That leaves me with 10 cockerels, that to me is a reasonable number to grow out. Too many fir me to keep the all. If they continue to look good and grow well ill choose me three to keep for future roosters. I'm going to try placing a couple with someone who wants to ( partner) with me. Not really as a partner but someone that will continue to breed the NN and trade out eggs and it breeding stock.
There are a couple or so that have totally to nearly no feathers on their necks so those are definitely keepers if their weights are good.

Now for a few pictures:

This isa shot of one of the babies that is 1/4 Easter Egger. Notice the nearly bare belly and il the side if the breast area. This us what I think @Kev was talking about EE getting into the mix and causes neatly baldness on the chick.

I don't know what color to call this I think it is pretty though.

Be back a little later with more pictures.

Yes! That's a variant on nakedness that pea combs can cause.

Last pic looks like it might turn out red duckwing or partridge...

The outfits didn't fit exactly as I intended, but I adjusted them today, these pics are from before the adjustments. I also figured out a better way to alter the onsies.

Oh thanks for the laugh! You seem to be getting very close to the ideal pattern for nakeds... I'm definitely following your pictures for ideas...

I have 4 NN pullets, 2 white and 2 red. if I breed 1 white to BCM, what colours will I get? and 2 reds + 1 white with this guy (rumpless araucana):

his breast is red.

White is the hardest color to tell what to expect in crosses... as it;s actually a gene that prevents whatever color the bird has from showing up.. or it has another kind of gene that prevents black pigments only.

With the former kind of white, it literally can be any color or pattern and you will just have to be surprised in the cross and later generations.

If it's the latter, expect at least half or all white chicks.

BCM is a dominant color/pattern so I'd expect a lot of BCM looking chicks with some of them getting almost as much red as the araucana in picture.

Reds with that araucana= most likely a lot of cream downed chicks growing up either red or very close to his coloring... hard to tell what could come out of the white hen, she would be fun mystery one for sure. :)

Okay, I'm really loving this little guy. His growth rate, while not quite as impressive as his father's, is still quite good with a 247.33% increase in weight since hatching, currently weighing in at 4.55 ounces at 2 weeks of age. And look at those thick shanks!!! I'm really hopeful that this guy will turn out to be a good breeder. None of my other boys in this group even come close to his gains, and so far his personality and vitality are fabulous as well. And his bow tie is quite small, which I really like.

Oh....and I named him Ozzy. All that black smudged below his eyes just reminded me of Ozzy Osborne for some reason.
