Naked Neck/Turken Thread

My favorite breed of water bird. I consider them somewhat more goose than duck but I really admire the Muscovy.

geneticists have a hard time placing where they are in the waterfowl family tree.

the latest attempts seem to give a slight favor putting with the shelducks. Shelducks are also often considered half-geese half duck...

It's genetic and can be bred for or against. There are mnay people trying to breed for less skin, there are lines where the girls have just a little round patch around the eye. It's either due to not liking the bare skin, or being in very cold winter areas.

Also they can be bred for smoother or bumpier skin areas.

The ones with skin down the necks looking like turkeys are very rare, only seen them twice in person, it is not age related in these. Here's a couple examples:

they are beautiful! I have never seen them.

LOL! I love Muscovies...the way they look....how quiet they are...I'm still trying to convince my family that they're a worthwhile investment here in the desert. I had seriously considered raising turkeys instead, but after obtaining my Thanksgiving bird from a local breeder and hearing how incredibly noisy those birds can be, I'm once again favoring Muscovies. I think that once I get this aquaponics thing figured out I may build a pond/aquaponic structure to provide a cool spot for the Muscovy and year-round fresh greens for my birds.

Yippee...more projects! LOL!

I was all set with plans to get muscovies in the spring, but the chicken plans have expanded more than I originally planned, so I need to take a look at space for ranging and where I could put the duck house now....

I'm starting to think we're soul sisters.

Yay, another fan! I had no idea this variety existed until I visited a peafowl breeder and there was one just like the top one except in black,, I was floored and wanted to take her home but she said not for sale.... but then a week later she sold it to someone who was making it into soup... to be honest I was a little upset at that.. such a waste.

However not too long after, a bobcat came by and wiped out all the muscovies and geese... sigh......

Yeah! I really like that black skin with red carncules, how fancy.. ;)

if I may...... ducks are MESSY. Splash water everywhere and they don't poop... they squirt!

I don't know how it's like for other climates but in our desert climate, that attracted serious, serious numbers of flies. Like, flies everywhere in the coop, all over sides of buildings porches by the house.

to be honest, the number of flies dropped dramatically after the bobcat took them for takeout...

maybe not best for situations where a partner or close by neighbors are already unenthusiastic about your hobby- the sheer number of flies dove ME crazy and is the only reason I haven't got them again.

p.s the waterfowl flock was always small- an average of something like 4 muscovies, 3 mallards, 4 geese totally free ranging on an acre... they never were confined at all(which is how bobcat got to them so easily).
