Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Offal is all the unused parts after butcher.  Most "butchers" wouldn't consider organ meat offal since it is eaten by people, but I don't eat organ meat.  I don't like feeding the intestines b/c of potential for parasite or disease (ecoli, salmonella, other feces born disease)

I also like to cook the bones in pressure cooker or crock pot depending on season (winter in the crockpot summer in the pressure cooker) until soft and grind them up in the blender and mix w/ cheap bread for added minerals.

Now I get it!

Great idea about bones. I have never heard anyone doing it.

my broody is not a good mom either. yesterday 5 hens and 1 roo broke in their coop. poor chicks ran to the nest screaming and the broody didn't miss the opportunity to get out. luckily the intruders were busy with their feed and ignored the chicks.

Maybe she thought to run out and fight the others to protect the chicks. Hens act differently than others do sometimes.

I'm so sorry about your broody, but perhaps she was trying to lead the chicks away and they just didn't follow?

I wasn't there when the hens and roo broke in. maybe she understood they were not going to harm them. and she was frustrated closed in the small and dark place. I moved them today to another pen that is not big but has a window on a sunny side. she feels better but still wants to get out. will have to wait, cats would eat the chicks now.

I would guess that the hens and roo broke into the broody/chick area just to eat the feed that belonged to others. But who knows why broody momma did what she did. From observation of my flock all my broodies seem to defend their chicks. So far that is

Watching the behavior of mother hens with their brood is second only to the food that the chickens provide.

KASS now those are some photos that are up to your usual standards! Momma is an outstanding beauty despite her Houdan typy comb. I can't wait to see subsequent photos as she ages.

you are right about the hens, roo and the feed.

my broody pecked me when I tried to take the feeder away. I guess she is not that bad. and the chicks are little piggy eaters! their wings and tails are fully feathered, white with black spots. I hope they are girls. NNs usually develop tail early if girls, but that is at the age of 4 weeks that we can say. although I have 3 mutts I bought as boys due to lack of tail at 4 wk old. I am glad about that as I still cannot butcher my chickens.
