Naked Neck/Turken Thread

my big fat girl has a swollen foot and a bit runny eye. another NN girl has a swollen foot as well but she has a visible scratch line on it. the other day I found my big fat girl with some blood on her bow but didn't find any wound. it seems she was fighting with something - we have mice, rats and birds here. she also stopped laying and seems to have some intestinal issue as well. I started baytril yesterday but I do suspect viral arthritis more than MS. in my flock's history it has always been viruses. I still have a few chickens coming out of the fowl pox, could they have swollen legs from that? any experiences or suggestions?

If so, you could call her Flub-a-Dub.  Remember that one?

Lol...yes I will if it turns out to be a pullet for sure!!! It may just grow her flippers after scratchin' around in all this rain...just wonder how long I can keep her hat on!!!

if the swelling is hard and at the bottom of the leg part, might be bumblefoot? other than that, no idea..

by intestinal issue if you're seeing blood, could be cocci or worms...

no bumblefoot. I think she has intestinal issue because I found undigested food in her poop and her belly looked a bit swollen but not hard. today that part at least looked better. both of my girls have a bit swollen feet like old people who have arthritis. no liquid in the joints. they eat and drink so I hope they will get well.

Do you fed them a lot of bread of foods like pasta?

chickengr with poor food absorption due to intestinal or systemic issues, bodies do swell up because protein is lacking. Sorry to hear about your two birds as they do sound sick. I think I remember you saying that they are NN/turkens and asked if this breed is known to have illness more than other breeds. That is not the case as most of us have found that NN are healthy, calm good dual purpose birds. As a plus they are fun to mix with other breeds. However I do not have any special advice except to keep up with the supportive care.

Phil98 My biggest nn girl and layer of biggest egg is a mix with a Blue laced red Wyandotte which have rose combs and are a breed from here in the US. But I guess there is a similar bird in Europe ? Hope your roosters tolerate each other as fighting is hard to deal with. Not sure how long it is necessary to keep a flock inside their coop/run until they learn to return in the evening. Some birds are smarter than others and just follow. Others are either contrary or just plain dumb.

In Europe we have the same breeds and colors as you in US but the standard is a bit different.
I think that blue laced red wyandottes are not recognized yet, am I right?!? I said that because these teo are similar, not the same but very close and my has single comb.

Roosters, hm. I don't know what to say about them. They don't chase each other anymore but for some reason little rooster is scared to death and when my rooster gets near him he gets panic attack.

I let them out of the run yesterday before dark and just a few of them went outside. They don't go far from the coop and just 7 girls were out. I guess it was because I let them just a bit too late. Today I will let them out around 10 am. Oh and yes, they came to coop all by themselves.
