Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I will say, even though I'm not a fan of barring, that is one pretty cockerel.
I have used barred colored posters before though, once when I need a NN rooster and couldn't find anything else reasonably priced and another time with the Orange Barred one I had. Just used them long enough to get chicks off of and kept offspring that wasn't barred. I did keep two barred pullets though but plan on using them them other colors to make non barred.

I had a black & white barred cockerel named Screech that I couldn't wait to cull. I love my Barred Rocks, but I just don't like the same look on my NNs. BUT, I love the buff and red barring on them. Here's my red barred NN, Raymond:

And just because I actually managed to get the shot as they all came out to see me in their run, here are most of my boys in the bachelor pad and the girls still pining away for them from outside the pen.

There are actually very few fights. I may see 1-2 scratches per week, if that. They were all raised together and have a lot more room than how it looks from the photo.

When did you separate them? (I'm thinking if I'm better prepared, housing-wise, to separate the boys form girls earlier as is generally recommended, that I may be able to get more time with the boys being able to live together without too much bloodshed.

I have a confession to make. I just put my name down with a breeder for German New Hampshires, Blue Copper Marans, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and a couple olive eggers. It was always part of my plan, but I thought I would put it off. Decided to just go ahead and get them now. I will probably cross in with my NNs. More building to do...

I moved the girls out a week ago, so they were around 16-17 weeks old.

Oh my! I think you may want to consider buying some pre-made coops for all those birds! You're going to wear yourself out trying to keep up with all those birds.

don't they fight when the girls are on the other side of the wire? and do they all crow when in the same coop?

I was thinking to keep the boys together but my 3 runs are next to each other.

He's so lovely!!!! Pretty boy!

I'm so beat - I've been working on the coop all day. Made good progress, still more to do, but it was time to stop...

How in the world am I going to stay awake long enough to do work laundry and lock the chickens up?!

what are you doing in the coop?

I guess there should bee pine trees where you live. that saved my life. I collect pine leaves together with some dirt underneath and use it as bedding, deep litter system. I also through some in the run. as there is no grass in the run my chicken scratch those leaves and catch bugs otherwise there would be no bugs at all. that keeps them busy and my coop smells like pine forest. chickens go inside during the day and turn it so I am free, lol.

I only did it when I realized what I will plan to do for them, and also what I will do for solo roosters (the A-frame thing). The tractor I built has been surprisingly good for the Naked Necks. I will still move them into their final digs (hopefully this week), but with a few modifications it could do well. Also, I don't plan to keep all of them. I'll keep small numbers of selected ones. Now that I have an incubator, I can replace as needed in small numbers (or do a "meatie hatch" - does anyone do that?). I've got a pasture/paddock rotation system in my mind that I need to set up - need to finish thinking it through.

Oh, it's not chores/cleaning - I'm building a new coop, so I was working on final construction (almost done). I use deep litter as well. No pine trees in my specific area, but I use pine shavings as bedding.

I will say that the barring does look better with the red and buff colors than black and white ( regular barred). The one that I had that I called orange barred looked like a regular barred chicken but had orange saddle feathers with some scattered in other places.
