This feed store is in an area that chickens are utilized for both eggs and meat, so they tend to bring in quite a few chicks at a time. I'm hoping for a large variety to pick from if I can get there first.
I did think about grabbing the largest and hoping for a few hens. If I remember right they only had straight run last year.
You should have seen the look on the kids face when I asked if they were getting any NN chicks this year. Then the manager who is getting to know me says yes the Turkens will be in at Easter and tells me to call at the beginning of the week to verify the date. I'm hoping to get him to hold some of the better ones for me.

A lot of the "chicken" and "protein" in pet food is finely ground up feathers and some chicken offal and bones.
In some cheaper varieties of canned dog food you can actually see the coarsely ground up feathers.
