Naked Neck/Turken Thread

There doing well. I was hoping for a broody mom before the eggs hatch, but it's not looking to promising.

I have read on fb today that if we give fresh dough (from making bread) that hens will get broody. we should give them just a bit and repeat it in 5 days. they say that yeast triggers broodiness.

Yes, even on pet food the listing is in order of most to least content.

I'm waiting for the day you start posting photos of the roadkill you picked up to feed to your chickens.

Keep on waiting! I have a really weak stomach, lol

This feed store is in an area that chickens are utilized for both eggs and meat, so they tend to bring in quite a few chicks at a time. I'm hoping for a large variety to pick from if I can get there first.

I did think about grabbing the largest and hoping for a few hens. If I remember right they only had straight run last year.

You should have seen the look on the kids face when I asked if they were getting any NN chicks this year. Then the manager who is getting to know me says yes the Turkens will be in at Easter and tells me to call at the beginning of the week to verify the date. I'm hoping to get him to hold some of the better ones for me.

Do they grow faster than non NN

Not any faster than non NN. It's down to what genetics are in their lines.

Way back then, the hatchery NN were heavier/meater than rocks, RIR etc but it had nothing to do with being NN.. the other breeds were simply very egg production bred and apparently meat traits hung on in the NN. However the current NN I got from hatchery last fall aren;t meaty.. much more like a barred rock now which comes as a surprise/disappointment to me but anyways it seems a fair number of us are interested in breeding for bigger/meatier NN. It seems many other breeds are basically lost to mainly egg production, but probably with separate lines bred more for meat(example, you can still find meatier white rocks in the overall rock breeds)

A lot of the "chicken" and "protein" in pet food is finely ground up feathers and some chicken offal and bones.

In some cheaper varieties of canned dog food you can actually see the coarsely ground up feathers.

Wouldn't be too happy about feathers in the feed but then if they are already eating feathers...

don't think offal is such a bad thing as long as it's 'safe' for them to eat, especially if other ready/bulk sources of animal protein is just about inaccessible..

what do you think of Costco chicken and rice cat food? Got a bag from there last night- the listing went is this: chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, something, something, something, chicken fat etc..
