Naked Neck/Turken Thread

the rats we have here don't come near trap. last year I put a piece of meat and they didn't try to take it. I mixed chickens feed with gypsum and only small mice ate it and died. there is no safe place for me to put anything as my chickens are in the corner of my property and can get into it. I will see if I can figure out something with scramble eggs. but I will mix some gypsum just in case.
Makes me grateful that my cat and two chihuahuas are good ratters. Or rather, the cat's good at catching them, and the two dogs are good at doing in the rat when the cat gets tired of playing with it...

I've stopped feeding free will. Making sure feed is finished every meal. That has helped at the coops. Now they are drawn to the barn where the feed is stored. Their population has become much more controllable since the 24/7 smorgasbord has been closed.

The One Bite poison is extremely effective here as it has an attractant in it for them. Some say it doesn't work for them but I've had good success with it. Problem is its too strong and has been banned here in California due to its second kill capabilities. That's why I put it on the trap securely. No other bait works for me.

Mini Meat has suggested the electric trap. I'm going to find out more about it as I really don't think the traps get all. As of late no holes in feed bags. I will try to contain the food in containers

The scrambled eggs sounds good.

What does the gypsum do?

when they drink water gypsum becomes like stone so they die.

I feed cats but they don't stay near the coop at night. my dogs would catch rats but there is a small space where the rats can run but dogs don't fit. I must knock the old coop down and then sit and think what to make. there are fields and a lot of abandoned old houses near me so there are too many rats as well.

Get rid of the food source and the rats will leave. Feeding fermented feed will help as it puts you more in tune with what they are eating so you will adjust accordingly to what they actually eat and they will gooble it up so nothing left. Plus more nutricious and less nutrition is lost to the poop, so won't do rats much good to eat that (and I hear dogs eat the poop less as well because the nutrition is digested and not found in the poop).

Three generations. Okay the first one shown is not a NN but her mama was.

Dad: a Blue Red Splash Easter Egger.
Mom: a Buff (Black Tailed ) Naked Neck.
A Blue Salmon Splash. Laid a green egg. Mother of:

A Wheaten Duckwing Naked Neck. Laid a green egg.
By a Salmon NN: here he is

A Black NN. Lays a brown egg.
Dad: a Black Jersey Giant.

I've got babies of hers that have hatched out on 3-24-2016. Not sure yet if they are pullets or cockerels. If they turn out pure black I will be keeping a black cockerel. Sire of her chicks is a Brown Red NN.

My NN rooster is missing some tail feathers, actually all of his nice long and pretty tail feathers. Noticed it yesterday and thought maybe they fell out but they are in the shape of a V at the top and have been broken off, nice and evenly it appears. No blood was drawn, just white tips on the ends of the pins.
I opened the coop (I keep mine in a hutch) and found an end of one of them. So I am thinking the hen I keep him with has found a new treat. I lock these two in the box at night so the rooster doesn't wake me up so early, so not much way a rat did it.
Is this normal and should I find the hen a new part of the hutch to stay in?

Nearly all of my birds look awful right now and are missing feathers, including my roosters missing tail feathers. I think this is just an especially "frisky" time of year and it's taking its toll on them. Most of my roosters are missing tail feathers, most of my cockerels have bloodied combs, and nearly all of my pullets and hens have bald backs. My gorgeous flock has gone grunge.
