Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Took some pictures out in the run today, didn't get good photos of all 4 NNs but the two I do have are looking so big now!

This is Tugboat. He's turned in to a broad beefcake and is the favorite boy toy. He wears his home-made crow collar just fine.. you can see Werewolf in the background with the commercially produced one on. He gets that thick ugly thing since he's brains over brawn! Kept getting the weaker home-made one off in minutes.

Marshmallow is so beautiful! She is laying now, too, along with her sister Hamster... and the eggs are coming out w/bulls eyes! So once my incubator empties out later this week I know what eggs I'm setting. Fingers crossed for a scaleless, but I'd be happy with just some more hens.

My rooster.

A shot of his back.

A picture of @Kev 's rooster.

Do these look like the same color? I'm not really color blind but sometimes I don't think my eyes pick up the same colors as others.

Oh yeah I think they are the same or nearly the same color. A hobby name sometimes used is "Golden" as it describes the light yellow color on the roo hackles and saddles plus the wing patch. Genetically, it is simply the roo being half silver half gold. It is hard to catch their true golden tint in pictures.. was lucky to have a rather good capture of his gold coloring on saddle feathers in that picture but his wing patch and cap look white or almost white in that same picture.. in person they are clearly "golden" I can tell the sun is making the saddles on your roo much whiter than they are in person.

For reasons I don't know, silver is normally 'very' dominant, with roosters having a clear or almost clear white hackles and saddles.. except in "golden lines" the roosters get the gold color instead. Good example I can think of are Golden phoenix. Other crosses or mixes can throw golden colored roosters though.. like my roo, this boy was a pleasant surprise to me.

Also my rooster is partridge(eb) for sure- he had brown down all over as a chick, no stripes. I suspect that rooster is also partridge...

I forgot to mention We have had huge succes at the barn with an electric rat trap. We caught the momma on day one and cleaned up her litter two or three at a time over the next couple days. Pappa came by a bit later. 12 rats over a 2 week period. It was baited with Horse cookies.

They are pricey but I would have to say well worth it.

I'm also curious where you got it and what brand?

No rats here just mice but their numbers are high right now.. always happens after extremely heavy rains.. during wet El Nino years the herons and egrets actually hang out and hunt in fields because there are SO MANY mice.. especially in the alfalfa fields.

The cat tries to hunt for them but all too often the mice are just out of her reach by staying inside the pens, grr...

Do any of you have experience with sumatras? I started to like the breed, but I want to know how do they act. Are they agressive, flighty, tame, almost wild or whatever. And do hens tend to go broody?

Are they completely black and carry fm or they just have gipsy face?

A little controversial, for a long time they were said to be gypsy faced with normal skin. However there would be the occasional person who intentionally crosses fibro into them for their own reasons.

Still, most of them in US are gypsy faced not fibro.

They are variable in personality.. generally more on the shy/aloof side. Can be flighty- btw they are very very good fliers, being light birds coupled with large feathering... not good for gardens or keeping in runs, ha.

as for aggression.. some of them are not tolerant of roosters, some do turn aggressive towards people. But generally not 'warriors' like the fighting chickens.

they are a highly broody breed.

@Kev , congrats on your new BYC Spirit badge!!!!

Thank you and much thanks to whoever nominated me.. not big on getting compliments myself but will say it is a nice thing... :)

I had no luck with the NN/araucana eggs. only 1 started to hatch but died before got out. another egg had just a slight crack, and 1 no crack and a dead chick inside. 4 gone bad, and 3 OE eggs gone bad. only 3 BCM hatched:

this time I hired a broody, so it is not her fault. she usually has 100% of success in hatching.

my muscovie duck is still sitting but the only NN egg was stolen by a rat. those are due around april 12th.

I think I found my breed!

It doesn't matter if they are gypsy or fm, like it either way, but what is standard calling for?

I generally don't like very tame breeds like most of you guys like, but are they really that small? They look nice size especially roosters.

Broodies?!? Great!

I thought that they are agressive because they look like asian game birds of some kind and I was really glad when you said they are not people agressive, but there are always exceptions to the rules.

Did you get your trap at Home Depot, who's the manufacturer if I may ask

We all chipped in and a barn mate ordered it. I'li get the info on it as soon as I see him.

@Pensmaster

@Kev

I went ahead and texted him. It was this model from amazon.

It was full price when he ordered it. $49.99

http://www.amazon.com/Rat-Zapper-RZ...096&sr=8-2&keywords=rat+zapper+ultra+rat+trap

He has been managing it and says it has 35 confirmed kills so far. Way more than I thought. He says others in different barns at the same facility have ordered it with great success as well.
Over 150 horses at the place so... LOTS of rodents.

So glad you joined us! We definitely love our NNs here and it's always nice to meet someone new who can appreciate the unique beauty of this breed. You're babies are adorable! I look forward to seeing more photos in the future and seeing how they grow and develop.
Thanks Desert Chic. I am looking forward to seeing how your babies develop, especially the NN/ Bielefelder as I have 3 pure Biel boys as well as the X's, who need some big girls. I have plenty of time yet to decide who will get my 2 precious NN's. This week the babies will be taking short day trips outside to broaden their horizon's.
