Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I am new to Naked Necks.  Just purchased 3 young birds at an auction.  I was using the facilities and my husband bid on them while I was out of the arena.  He knew I like them, and wanted a few bantam buddies for my little bantam Cochin pullet.

I'm glad to see there are so many Naked Neck lovers here, as I don't know much about them and already have questions.

I believe 2 of them are crossed with Silkies because they have 5 toes and pretty turquoise earlobes.  Not exactly Silkie feathers, more straight with a bit of extra fluff.  One of them does not have a naked neck, but I don't care.  The box they were in just said "Bantam Naked Neck Cross - Straight Run" and I have no idea who they came from.

I will post pictures in the next few days in hopes that you savvy Naked Neckers can help me clear up what they may be crossed with.  Already planning to do some crosses and they aren't even breeding age yet!

Looking forward to chatting about them and reading everyone's post!

Welcome!

They are probably silkie crosses and the one that isn't naked neck doesn't even carry that gene. So if you breed him/her with other non- naked neck birds you can't get another naked neck.

And if you don't know- straight run means that birds that you got are not sexed, so they might turn up being males or females.

You ought to have seen the naked becks eating at that watermelon rind. Eating it up very fast.

Haha yes they go crazy for it. They won't eat the thin outer skin though.

ditto for honey dew and cantaloupes.

They will eat pumpkin, but usually leisurely so they last a long time. I try to get them on sale on or day after Halloween. It used to be easy to get lots of them but lately they are either totally gone or there is a limit of one or two per customer.

We have a big garden we just feed mine cantaloupe squash cucumbers zucchini corn yesterday since we stop growing them I picked everything so it don't go to waste n the love the veggies

Hello and welcome to BYC and the Naked Neck (Turken) Thread.
Yep, you most likely got the Showgirls, it will take another cross to the Silkies to get a true Showgirl though.

I've been trying to get pumpkins on sale also, but I never can find them very cheap. I've been trying to watch for veggies that are starting to look a little wilted and ready to throw out for humans, but he grocery stores won't let anyone even have them at really reduced prices. they think people won't buy them at the regular price if they let something go cheap for animal consumption.

I have a local store that discounts fruit n veggies before they throw them away but it's not often they have discount stuff available I try n buy it all when I see they have some if it something I can feed my animals

I've tried asking but always get no we don't do that or we are not allowed to do that legally etc.

Yet hear of other folks around me getting regular loads of discounted veggies, breads etc. Just recently learned of a local-ish newbie to the hobby(something like one or 2 yrs by now) getting this kind of thing.. in my 30 years of trying on and off with zero success............. can get a little annoying, feels like I haven't figured out the secret handshake or something.

I've done the bread thing, its good but really too far to drive to get it and really save on the feed. Summer time is really hard to store it also, it gets moldy too fast. No extra refridge/freezer to store it in either.

Yeah I've wondered about the food storage issue, would not have been a problem back when I had 500+ birds total lol

Right now I'm allright with the commercial poultry feed plus dry cat food as source of animal protein. For fresher protein, mixing eggs into their feed now and then. Got a bunch of cheap dog food bowls from the dollar store to make that mix in.. they really like it and they get extremely excited seeing those bowls coming to them lol
