Not sure how I would qualify for this. I was ordering chicks from a chick catalog(McMurray) and was picking the 'weird' ones like polish, modern games etc... the catalog has the ugliest pic you could ever possibly make of a NN.. so I was intrigued yet very turned off by that picture. Ordered just a pullet. It very quickly became my favorite and got me hooked on the breed. Did not love the pic but sure loved the very first NN I ever saw in person(that pullet chick)

I also found the NN photos ugly, while the NNs in person I find to be beautiful. Not sure why, but I really, really do.

Today was separating out some of the chicks.. noticed this pullet has cool legs- one all yellow leg and one leg with a large patch of green mainly down one side:

Tank has a bluish green patch on one of his leg near the "knee" joint just like that... When it first showed up I thought he had been injured, but I think it's pigmentation. What do you think is going on? Mosaicism?

lost them in 2 days. I am scared to death I might loose more. I have at least 5 sick birds and heat is unbearable. I am not sure if brindusha was sick or she died from heat. I found her in the nest box stretched.

One of my girls passed today also. Now I only have two naked neck hens and feel very bad about it.

I am SO sorry to hear this! Tough year for heat and chickens. I bought misters and have them running during the day. The water bill is crazy, but the birds are happy and doing ok. (It's been 98-100F every day for over a month, which is normal here - or a little mild, actually.)

I'm an enabler so I'm all for you going to the source.

I'm getting some hatching eggs from Linda, due to be shipped out on July 5th. She's giving me a mix of pure DC and some of her crossed birds. I'm VERY excited about their potential and plan to cross them to my best NNs.

My first instinct was to ask you what your source was, but I'm trying to curtail projects and chicken math. So I will follow along instead - please keep us posted, I have always been interested in this cross.

mine get crazy about watermelon, too. they also love cucumbers and tomatoes. I chop them so they pick a piece and start running like crazy while shouting, lol.

I am SO sorry to hear this! Tough year for heat and chickens. I bought misters and have them running during the day. The water bill is crazy, but the birds are happy and doing ok. (It's been 98-100F every day for over a month, which is normal here - or a little mild, actually.)

I couldn't use misters because water is boiling hot during the day. I bought nipples to make an automatic waterer and gave it up for the same reason.

As for me: Three roosters - big lungs, loud, but reasonable about when they crow. Five cockerels. No complaints so far, fingers crossed...

I rehomed one black copper marans cockerel. I brought him to the feed shop as the owner's aunt wanted a cockerel and I met there the guy who owns an iron shop (I shop there). he, his wife and his son are very nice people. he wanted the cockerel so I was very happy that my little Nandi found a good home. I can visit him whenever I want to

Zucchini!!!!!! Mine LOVE zucchini!

mine eat zucchini only if cucumber is not around, lol. I have noticed that my chickens prefer watery treats. in winter they prefer oxalis to any leafy veggies too.

Yeah, S&G min order is 100. They used to have hatching eggs available on their site also, cheap (but min order of 15 dozen...), don't see that anymore, but they might if asked, IDK.
I figure if I order the hundred, pick out so many of the ones I 'need', advertise the rest on CraigsList and local newspaper, should be pretty easy to unload them before spending too much on feed.

Yeah, min order of 100. It used to be 50, which was also too many, but I wished I had jumped on that. One day I may actually drive there to pick them up or something, so I can get fewer... I can only reasonably brood and grow out 25 at a time.

We gave some thought to the one hundred count order but were quickly slapped back into reality with the gifts from WV. We figured to start culling, early and often until er got down to a very manageable # of roughly 25. But, even 25 extra butts to deal with would press our limits of sanity especially if we plan to work on the Windfall we find ourselves with. And after getting a bit of mental and physical rest, we're making plans for winter hatching. When I go back to WV late next month, I'll be bringing the incubator back with me.
