how do you cope with heat?

I have just lost my lakenvelder girl, RIP lucky. she has never been well, never knew why. she laid some shell-less eggs.

my aniela (white Nn) is limping again. I am afraid I will loose her too. have other 3 not well, 1 probably has a cancer or similar. she has water belly and lays eggs from time to time. the other 2 cannot walk properly but getting better. as they eat and dring, never lost any weight I suspect salmonella. bloody rats always bring trouble. first they appeared then my chickens got sick. these 2 lay eggs almost every day so I don't feel like killing them. I am overloaded with chickens anyway. chicken math

I'm sorry to hear about your losses and the sickness in your flock.
The heat here is almost unbearable. So far I haven't lost any birds except the one back in June to the heat. My runs are built in under trees and is surrounded by woods so it helps shade out part of the sun beating down on them.

The main part of dealing with heat is having completely open sides to the pens with the roof mostly or totally solid for shade and maximum air movement to the side. Anything enclosed or even three sided gets way too hot. be sure to have this type of pen not fully exposed to the sun coming in from the sides in the morning or evenings though.. there are trees/large bushes and/or the inner sections are wide enough so there is shade all the time.

On the hotter days when the nights are staying above 65 combined with days over 110, the floors get raked up and hosed, usually for the bigger heavier birds and most especially if they are not naked necked. It's both to clean their pens and cool them down.

as for health, try posting in the diseases/injuries section? sorry on your troubles... as for limping, ask about it over there too.. but for heavy birds, it is best to have low perches, just 2 feet off ground.. heavy birds can get hurt coming off high perches. some cornish people either dont give perches at all or put them at 2 foot height.. if she has been sleeping on ground or low.. that is a puzzle.

as for the rats I'd say think about commercial poison if nothing else has worked too well.. had a mouse explosion here, I am very allergic to mice so I had to take major action... because the mice were staying inside the pens, what I did was empty out some of the sections and put poison in these.. and made sure there was zero feed left overnight. Seems to be working well, am seeing dead mice, weak mice and bad smells.. very worried about the chickens eating a dead or dying mice though.. am not eating any of their eggs for a good while just to be sure.

Hope things get better for you!

my chickens stay outside in the run all day long. I think they cope with heat better than me, lol. I made shades for them and I also wet their run about the noon. they love it, start to scratch straight away then have dust bath in the wet dirt.

I wonder if aniela's limping might be a roo's business. he is a bit rapist *******. their roost is the only one that is low. I put aniela in the hospital coop, no roo and she looks better (I hope I didn't imagine it).

I killed a few of rats but the others keep coming. they are not inside the coops but they walk in the runs. I saw another one this evening and put poisoned wheat which will kill a few of them and then the new ones will come... never ending story.

I have 3 red sex links and 2 hybrid leghorns that are almost 2 years old. they look like very old birds. I don't think they can live for long. I feel sorry for them but I will never buy hybrid birds again. so I expect more losses.

For rat and mice problems, we had great luck with two products.

One is poison, and as much as we don't like to use it now, it was doing job when we didn't know abou the other one. Now we used poison in some kind of small bags and rats were crazy about it. The second you put it somewhere, they would get out to eat it. Nowadays we have to have a permission to use it.

Now we use something that is called pest reject and pest reppeler. You plug it in and it makes some kind of vials that they can't tolerate so they leave. It also works for bugs. Oh and you can't have any kind of guinnes, smaller rabbits or hamsters for pets. It drives them crazy. No harm for dogs or chickens.

Is there any animal you're not allergic to?

Maybe making some of these would help with your mouse/rat problem?

Haha yeah it seems that way sometimes..... I absolutely cannot use anything laundry or body care related materials with any scent.. new clothes have to be rinsed then washed twice before I can wear them.. can't eat or even touch a lot of plants..

a nephew is very allergic to rabbits, another to guinea pigs and then there's me with mice.. seems to be a theme..

Ask your local shelter about their feral cat program. They catch, sterilize feral cats and relocate them to barns, or people that have rodent problems.

thanks. I didn't want to use that because I was afraiid that can harm chicken and dogs. it seems I don't have a choice any more.

Maybe making some of these would help with your mouse/rat problem?

rats are much bigger and bloody smart. they are some kind of asian rats, much smarter than the common rats.
