Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I have 3. I have 2 youngins that I hatched out from my own flock, and then I have 1 old lady from a feed store.

This gal is a cross between a Black scooper Marans rooster and a red necked Neck hen.

This one is a cross between my RIR/Blue Copper Marans rooster, and a red Naked Neck hen. She is my favorite! I love her blue leakage!

I have a Blue Tailed Red. She is 1/4 Easter Egger.

Nice birds! I would not be afraid of crossing a lavender am with this bird, especially if you have a hard time getting an all black NN.

p.s. here's a lavender NN bantam I bred a long time ago:

lavender cuckoo NN

The initial cross was a modern game roo I happened to see as a chick at feed store- was shocked at such an expected and rare find... He was later bred with a white show stock bantam NN(thats where the cuckoo came from).. I don't remember how many generations down those two were from this cross. Probably second but could be third.. been a while.

I also created lavender black skinned NN.. but the challenge was too great, apparently lavender likes to dilute the black skin especially on the males as they grew up. They did look nice while their skin was still black as chicks though.

Thank you! If I can't find any pure black naked necks, I'll probing use her or I'll get some black ones from DesertChic.

I love the lavender! Do you have adult pictures of those birds?

What color Naked Necks do you have?

Not sure if there are adult pictures... don't have lavender birds anymore, but the gene still floats around in a line of black skin NN. I've done quite a lot of projects with NN over a couple decades with the chicken flock usually at 300ish birds.

I've scaled way way back down though..most projects are gone. I'm not really doing any color breeding right now so the colors are basically mixes. Right now most of the growing chicks are crosses with slow growing cornish cross for increased size/weights. These are white or barred. a few of the whites are looking like "paint", rather like it so maybe breed a line of paints(weight will be the main concern though( Many of the other chicks are like your marans cross- dark with brown highlights.

The only thing close to true breeding are the black skinned NN. All of the breeders are solid black but lavender and dark brown(eb) chicks occasionally pop up.

right now there's... 35 adult/breeders, maybe 50ish of this season's chicks- those are being raised out til culling age, example a bunch of pullets in a line are being kept until they are laying to select the green/blue layers with rest of them culled out etc.

The high numbers in past were due to having several project lines going on, pure breds, lines bred solely for sitting on peafowl eggs(very hard to hatch in incubators). It adds up very fast!

On top of the chickens, also had 100ish peafowl in 'rare' colors- purple, bronze, silver pied, etc and also did some projects such as making purple silver pied. Now have just one 25 year old white-eye peahen.

Had boundless curiousity about genetics and doing it hands on had plenty of time, had the space and feed was very cheap back then...... could not manage even half that number today.

I love genetics too. That's why I want to get into the naked neck gene and the lavender gene. Still on the lookout for pure black naked necks.

I have one NN pullet that's looking to be pure black. She came from one of my frizzles after mating with Pepper, my big black and white NN cross. You probably don't remember her...Bellatrix...she and her two sisters were in the cabin when you came by. She's still a few weeks away from POL, but she's looking promising right now. But there's also still a good change that Heisenberg fertilized some of the eggs you got from me and all of his offspring have been primarily black.

I vaguely remember her. Was she a younger one that was in the south west corner? (I've got a good sense of direction

Tomorrow is day 14, and I've got a good feeling about them. Knock on wood
