Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Been a slow week for t he Naked Neck thread.

I'm trying to gear up for a photo session on Monday if it isn't raining. Possibly Wednesday as an alternate day.

I bet everyone is waiting to see your photos.

I had bad luck with the marans eggs from france: 16 broken, 24 spoilt (probably left outside at 40+ celsius). maybe 3-5 good for hatching. I put 8 and will see what happens.

I'm so bummed! My top breeding NN rooster, Shiloh, died unexpectedly today after being chased by two of my up-and-coming cockerels. I was still distributing feed, had just seen him settle into their favorite dust bathing area, and not five minutes later he was laying there dead. My morning chores doubled while I immediately set to work processing him so as not to lose out on the meat, but it was NOT a good way to start the day.

Gonna miss the ole boy. At least he gave me some outstanding offspring to work with, but I had big plans for him.

Shiloh in his prime:

He processed out at only 5.5 lbs. I think he lost weight over the past few weeks during the pecking order battles, but he was incredibly lean and muscular. I'm thinking I'll try my hand at making Coq au Vin outta this boy after about a week of brining.

Some of my favorites of Shiloh's offspring:

RIP handsome boy! sorry for your loss. I bet heat is to blame.

I'm not too sure about that. This happened around 7:00 a.m. and it was only about 83ºF, but the humidity was up to about 87% so that could've been a variable. We've been having heavy monsoon rains and humidity this entire week so the temps have been bearable, and the humidity has been downright soupy.

I performed a necropsy of his innards and everything looked perfect. I'm thinking the stress of being chased and attacked so often combined with the high humidity just finally got to him.

Sorry for your loss! He was very beautiful! On a side note, what is that hen 2nd to last a cross of? She is beautiful!

She's a NN/Bielefelder blend. She has a younger sister that's practically her twin, but has green legs instead of black, slightly more golden red feathers, and the funniest little beard I've ever seen.

I think she is beautiful. I'll have to get some of those eggs next time too!

The Biel eggs are EXTREMELY difficult to hatch. I've never gotten my pure Biel eggs to hatch at all, only the crosses, and even those have been challenging. Nearly all the Biel-cross eggs I've hatched were put under broody hens instead of an incubator. Mama hens simply get the job done better.

Oh, well do you know why that is?

And I totally agree! Last time I used a broody, I have all 13 eggs hatch!

it seems that different breeds need different humidity. if you have a biel broody put her eggs and fingers crossed. just an idea.
