@Pensmaster
when should I prune vines (grapes)?

Good afternoon I usually prune mine long after the leaves fall off I think it's in January. Since I'm not concerned with getting fruit mine's more hit and miss at best. I'm going to experiment with the one on the chicken coop. Leaving the vines much longer than normal. I just don't want them close to the barn as they will grow into it causing damage if left long enough. I've found the chickens like to munch on the leaves as do the deer.

Lots of good info online that tells you how to prune as well.

thanks. I planted 4 vines this year and only 1 looks ok. one I planted 2 years ago and almost died, I moved to another place eventually died. I don't know what they need here as heat shouldn't be a problem. I know how to prune them but cannot figure out why they don't thrive on my land.

Mine don't do well either. They grow ok just not
Many grapes and the ones they do have are tiny. Then there's a dumb little moth that lays eggs on leaves and the larva destroy the plants

I planted three grape vines this year....and my chickens love them. In fact, they love them so much they've figured out how to break into the garden to eat them.

At least I may not have to worry about pruning them. My girls have eaten each of those vines down at least four times so far, and luckily they're still growing back.

I usually throw all spring growth I don't want in to them. The have figured how to jump and grab the leaves that grow through the coop. :lau
They are fast growing fortunately

Our grape vines grow too vigorously, I end up pruning in the summer also to give the bunches sunlight and keep the airflow good. Otherwise they get fungal infection and turns the grapes black. I didn't prune hard enough this yr and lost many big bunches. Really old vines, base vines are as round as a beer bottle. Plan on trying something new and prune right down to the main trunks this winter. And yup, chickens love the leaves :-D

A major problem people find with grapes is either too much shade or insufficient or unbalanced minerals in the soil. Time of planting is also critical...should be coldest months of fall or spring in my climate. I've been to Southern Greece several years ago with my dad and brother but I surely didn't pay much attention to the what was growing well there except.....well, you should be able to guess.

What do they feed them to make the grapes large. Mine are always just a bit larger than a pea.
