Naked Neck/Turken Thread

That'd be nuice, but I think I've decided not to pursue the Birchen project right now. I keeping the BIrchen hens I have though just in case something comes up though, or a really good price is offered.

For sure, that is a black tail buff with dominant white. Red sex links are a cross, so they are not pure for the dominant white.. red sex link bred with BT buff roo= half black tails, half white tails.

if you also want white NN, breed with black NN, but red/buff leakage will be a battle for couple generations. you can get around a lot of this by breeding with a birchen NN though- they leak silver which would be 'invisible' on a white bird.

Hm, is anyone currently working on CCLB x NN projects?? I'd love to find a use for my extra Legbar pullets that aren't exactly up to SOP but are great birds regardless, I figured with the NNs there'd be some interesting crosses. Was considering putting the barred cockerel with the spare legbars and seeing what madness they produce next year.

if the roo is pure barred, 100% barred in both sexes. If he is also pure for black(barred is just barring on a solid black bird), then all will eventually show extra color on necks plus saddles on the roosters. Either extra white, or a yellow/red color.

If the roo is not pure barred, all cockerels will be barred but half of the pullets won't be barred.

If the roo is not pure for black.. it will be a surprise what the non-blacks will look like. Probably expect at least some to look black tail buff but with the barring. If the roo has silver, probably expect some delaware patterns(black tail white with barring on the tail)

crossing the first generation together will throw a wide range of colors and patterns, including a few close to the legbar color.

This is also a way to make single comb colored eggers. Things like a bird that looks like SOP NN except it lays green or blue eggs, haha

So, I had three possible NN mix eggs in my incubator and TWO came out with little bare necks and bowties! I'm so excited! They won't be good for my (in my head) Brabanter project, but I'm excited to be part of the NN crowd now

congrats! and what's the bedding?

UGH! Our weather yesterday was nasty, cold, and wet....so naturally my birds decided to rearrange themselves in different pens/coops last night. Rather than put them back and prolong my misery in the foul weather, I just left them all where they decided they wanted to go. Big mistake. I went out this morning to find Zazzle horribly bloodied, as was his pen. Heisenberg has been winning fights lately and decided to kick Pepper and Peta out of the Turken Condo, leaving them homeless, so they decided to stay in the Easter Egger pen for the night...with Zazzle. Poor boy. Thankfully there doesn't appear to be any serious damage, but what a mess! Now I'm waiting to see what I'll have to do tonight to keep the peace. I really need to get around to butchering some extra birds.

@draye - If you lived closer I would GIVE Pepper to you for your birchen project right now. I just have way too many really wonderful roosters around here.

Oh man, that is an annoying thing about chickens- separating them makes enemies of each other(and not even that is always necessary).

fortunately their powers of healing are incredible.

Oh, what a drag. My four bachelors continue to get along, and every day I pray that they continue to do so - I really don't want to deal with rehoming them right now.
Quote: Not me, but it looks like that pine pellet stuff people use for cat litter (I used it when I had a cat). Its listed as a good bedding option for its absorbency, esp. for waterfowl, by Gail Damerow in her Hatching and Brooding book...

Yep, pine pellet bedding. At this point, it's larger than they can actually eat, but they do peck at it. It's also neat to watch the poo just kinda disintegrate into the bedding. Downside, they do also peck at that. I've never used this stuff before, but have heard good things so figured I'd give it a shot.

I may give it a try one of these days. Right now I can't locate any Black Tailed Buff roosters ( is that the same as a Buff Colombian?).
