Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I am w/ you guys on the feathered legs, not a fan, but I do like some bling on the head! :yiipchick   Mine were so many generations removed from the silkie blood I haven't had any real problems w/ the leg feathering, I will occasionally get some chick stubble, but never got even a feather in the adults.  The fm breeds mentioned are the only ones I'm aware of in the U.S.

I like the type of crest your chickens have. They don't bother their sight. I don't even like the look of ones that block eyes.

Glad Kev mentioned the green thing.  If your chickens have yellow skin the fm will look green, especially as chicks.  I love fm, but even I don't like the green, thankfully most out grow it like kev said.  I am not fond of yellow anyway so even w/o the fm consideration would prefer white skin (shown in the legs).  But yellow is standard for NN if that matters to you.

Skin of the white creted hen that you posted yesterday looked somewhat strange to me. Kind of light grey overtone. Is it just the picture or the thing you are talking about?

tbh, I don't like any of those traits... especially leg feathering after forever fighting to get clean it out after an one time cross with feather leg....

I don't really mind a crest. Just don't like feathered legs or silkied feathers...

Good to know - a lot of my NNs have white legs.

We actually free range our chickens but don't let them out too early- around 11, and close them around 5 pm.

My father in law has learned that works with his pigeons too, to keep them safe from hawks. By that time the warmer thermals have started and they've given up on the pigeons and went to soaring. Before that time they just sit there in the trees staring at his birds all morning.

So, since I'm snooping on this discussion I should probably add something. My brother likes to get random mixed hatching eggs at the livestock auction, and ended up with these two NN that he let me have. Since then, my life has upended. My birds are mixed in with a cousins flock in Utah, while I'm stuck in AZ. But I hope to get back up there and bring my birds down here soon. The only pics I have are from when the NN's were about 14 +/- weeks back in August. I last saw them in November, and they looked gorgeous. Especially the roo. I can't wait to see how they look now. Thing is, they are crossed with something that's given them feathered feet. I wanna say Maran, but really have no idea.

The crest in mine is all from your stock lol It can be cute just not something I "love" and it bothers me how it messes up the single combs- have a thing for these being all nice and straight..
