Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I lost another muscovie duck by a dog who found a tiny hole in the fence at 1 meter height. I am rehoming the remaining 2 ducks and I moved my chickens so that I can lock them at night. it was so good to keep them free.

I put my red Nn hen with my silver cuckoo marans cockerel. when can I start collecting her eggs? she has been with another roo till now.

If you want to make sure that the Maran cockerel is the father, you'll want to wait at least one week before collecting eggs for hatching. I typically wait at least 10 days and then still question whether I should wait longer, but that's how my mind works.

Sorry - it posted before the graph was ready. Of note, see the line that is dipping? That's chick #5. They all looked fine to me, but I'm going to need to go check on him tomorrow to see if there's anything wrong. (I'm not planning to keep him, but certainly want to be aware of any illness or injury in the meanwhile). Another valuable aspect to getting weights (which is admittedly a lot of work).

(to clarify - I didn't get weights week 1, so that's artificially been set as "0" for all chicks - I don't like to band them and bother them until they are 2 weeks)
Are these in 5 oz increments? Trying to get metrics against my own flock of Nn F2 x Delaware F1 crosses...

good luck with the house!

I have decided to sell my house in order to buy land and build another one so that I can keep as many chickens as I wish. at the moment I can keep 49. I already have almost 40 and it seems 2 hens are getting broody.

If you have 49 chickens moving around, who's going to count them to see if there are a 10 or 15 extra? If you had the limit of 6 like many American towns, an over-flow would be obvious.

In that vein, there's a joke among horse owners that they get horses all the same color so the spouse doesn't know it's not the same one. "Is that a new horse?" "No dear, that's just Fanny...... #6"

The S&G NN chicks are en route - they've been en route since Tuesday afternoon, and apparently left Denver this morning. They should be here in the morning - that's a long trip, hope they arrive in ok shape.

The post office stop before ours is awesome. They aren't even our location, but they called me earlier today to give me a heads up that my babies will be in our town ready to be picked up in the morning (I knew, but it was still super nice)....and to let me know they were peeping away and didn't sound distressed. I thought it was such a considerate gesture.

my granny witch neighbor sits on her balcony and counts them. she knows better than me how many chickens I have.
