Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

(I just went to Tractor Supply and picked up six 50-pound bags of chick starter. I'm edging close to that "mix your own" limit to go to the feed mill...)

A couple of questions.

1 - A couple of my chicks seem to be getting nicked by the feed trays that are out for them. Is there a better thing to use?
2 - I would say most of my chicks seem to have a raised bump where their spurs would be. I noticed a couple of them at hatch. Is this possibly a telling factor on gender? I do know that girls can have the bumps and/or spurs too, but still lol.
I didn't see whether this was answered, but I see those bumps on almost all my chicks. Both male and female. They aren't good indicators - watch the comb and wattles instead.

The first hatchling!

I'm behind or missing something - I somehow thought you were done for the year. Whatcha hatching?

That little one who almost died at hatch and rallied, is not going to make it after all. She has been doing great all week, just smaller then the others, but this afternoon out of no where she is near dead. If I had my big girl panties on I would cull her, but she doesn't seem to be in pain just very weak so I'll let nature take it's course unless she seems in pain.
Bummer. I'm in a slightly similar quandary - the severely stunted ones have survived and are growing ok, but for my purposes, I know I will cull them anyhow. If *I* had my big girl panties on, I would have culled them. But I've got a lot going on with all these chickens, and my big girl panties are otherwise occupied.

I have a S&G broiler Naked Neck report. They are growing fast, and seem to be visibly larger between morning and evening. They are moving around a lot when weighed - I am able to get accurate weights, but not great photos. But here are a couple.

Graph and table. Blue line is Tank for reference. The largest one is >2 pounds at 5 weeks.

Naked Necks, of course.

The bulk of the were sired by Monty, who's now brining in my fridge, and the rest by Zazzle, who we ate a couple weeks back. I'm curious to see if I get any fully feathered chicks this hatch, or if I was right in my selections to ensure NNs.

Sorry for being so quiet, it's been crazy here. But I've still been following and I love all the pics of your NN's. Finally had a bit of time to take photos today and caught my NN's dust bathing in some fresh dirt I put in the tractor for them. They're 2 weeks old now and doing great. This is my first time trying to post a video, I hope it works.

Got Stripey Butt's group out of the refrigerator coop and into thier section of the main coop. They were less then happy about the move. Just wait until the shuffle they are really going to be P.O.'ed. But that puts me one step closer to hatching Vader's eggs.

Wait, Monty is gone???

Yeah, I had to put him down. He was fighting with too many of the other boys and trying to claim all of the girls for himself. He nearly killed Chewey, bloodied up my beloved Bosch pretty badly even though Bosch won, and was relentless about chasing Heisenberg, who's now injured and receiving daily medical care in the hopes that his leg is only sprained, not broken. Luckily I have his son, Andres, who's even a better breeder in my mind that his daddy was.

Wow, that is a very beautiful rooster!
