Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I am new to NN and have 5 in the brooder right now at 5 weeks of age. The question I have is how do you keep the neck from sunburning when you first turn them outside? Looks to me like they would burn in 10 minutes!

Haven't noticed any sunburning on them. No sunblock or anything.. Their skin seems to stay the same color as it was in the brooder.

Some people think the red on necks is sunburn, it's actually the same reaction to sun exposure as on comb, wattles face on any chicken. A rooster with deep red neck is simply a very healthy rooster.

Nice setup and chicks. I don't know their status.. they have existed for a long time, just have not seen anything considering them heritage or something similar. Hatchery stock usually are bred for production and not matching the breed standard.. not a hybrid like the red sex links.

Thanks. I am working to take my naked necks and create my cross of meat birds that I can raise off of my farm instead of purchasing chicks.

I am going to try and cross them with:
White Rock
RIR
Buckeye
Austrolap
Americauan

I plan to start my crosses next year when my roo's are old enough.

I am getting my next batch from http://www.sandgpoultry.com/index.html as well as a couple other birds they have.

. It has been soooo hot and humid here... I think this Summer is gonna be a real hot one! With the storms we got a lot of rain... but nothing like flooding they got in San Marcos - WOW! How about you... I heard San Antonio got alot of rain.

It's super humid, we got a decent amount of rain, but nothing serious like flooding.
The grass is greener with the rain, and the chickens are lovin it !

We hatched several hundred NN chicks this year and have lost quite a few to cannabolism...Everyone says its late hatched chicks and over-crowding. Seems when there feathering out they can't resist and of course its all the great ones they start picking.
