Mort is smitten, flower.

. He will crow endlessly at her picture on the coop wall. He loves the Marilyn Monroe look.

The feather colour is lovely....such a pretty young lady. Mort LOVES pullets with feathers that colour (or black, or brown, or cream, or white or blue.......). Seriously, though, she is a very pretty hen. Were her parents a similar colour?

I candled the eggs in the incubator last night and THINK that there life is 4 out of the 6 of the La Fleche eggs:

This does not mean they will make tit to hatching, but does mean it is worthwhile re-starting the incubator even after what could have been at least a day, when the eggs are stone cold, and when the ambient temperature is typical British summer....(14degrees Celsius).

Mort's passions sound familiar ! i.e. I never met a rooster who did not LOVE women of any sort. Petunia came for a bin of chicks at the farm market store so knowing her is not possible.

Glad to hear that you still have some hope for success. I have never had a complete hatch yet. Not that I have attempted a great number but I consider 40% par from me and that is not very good because shipped eggs are expensive. I am wishing for a nice broody some day and of course a gentle rooster.

meuarcans do not understand celsius by the way and in general have not converted to metric. Such a backward country. tut tut At least some companies utilize the more functional military time.

OHBigmamma I like the sounds of your project. Also is that fly paper wrapped aroung that survival baby ?

I was bought up on Fahrenheit,Flower, but forced to go to Celsius when we became part of the EEC. (Oh isn't it good to get rid of your culture to become part of Europe?????) So, about 57 degrees Fahrenheit.

Never got used to using kilogrammes instead of stones, pounds and ounces, though!

I wish we had 'chick bins' here.

OHBigmamma.....lovely hen....and I hope I am as pleasantly surprised by my cold incubator as you.Crosses with Houdan sounds pretty cool.

Any other 'interesting' crosses about?

57 degrees is your SUMMER OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had never heard of "stones" for weight until the get fit thread one of the ladies uses stones for weight, I have to do kg for work, (medical field) but can't wrap my mind around stones. We also have to do a little Celsius, and the only thing I know about it is above 37 c is febrile.

The English folks have forever insisted on dropping every culture into the bin. Trouble is that they are an amalgam themselves. I have some mottled Houdans in the incubator now and may try the NN/Houdan cross sometime. On a philosophical note, isn't it less traumatic to mix breeds than "conquer" counties ?

Glad I'm from Wales.........not England, and yes the summers are often absolutely rubbish. Frost in June a few days ago, but usually plenty of water, so very green. My free range chickens grow like weeds in the tropics, however..
