He's beautiful! What egg size do your NN hens lay? Also, thanks for the information on Cackle- now we know the referral source for those wanting mottleds. btw where did you get your NN from?
Kev;
Thanks for the compliment! I found Octavius and his 2 sisters on Craigslist. You might recall I made posts about the rooster that didn't crow earlier
this summer. He is crowing now and is extremely aggressive. If I don't feed him first he goes for the ankles. I have the scars to prove it!
Octavius and his sister are about 16 weeks old (June) in this photo.
I bought them from an elderly couple in McQueeny, Texas that ordered the "Heavy" Special from Ideal. They bought the chix for
their grandkids, but the kids only wanted to play video games and weren't interested in the chickens. That's why they were for sale.
They were also trying to sell some BIG buff Orp and Hampshire hens and a Jersey Giant roo that at 16 weeks was about as big as a lawnmower!
I considered buying him too just because of his size, but decided I couldn't afford to feed him. HA! This was the first time I have seen
breeds other than NNs from Ideal. They were all FAT and healthy. Plus+ to Ideal.
Anyway, to answer your question, I have purchased about 25 pullet chix from Ideal. All are buff/brown/red, etc. They are all fat, have big butts, and lay big eggs.
I didn't know Ideal offered black, but apparently they do. I contacted them about some white NNs, that they don't breed.
I recommend their stock and they are super friendly on the phone if you call. Just remember Ideal is in East Texas and their accent is REALLY weird!
