Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hope for Naked Neck Breeders Society?

I'm at the Crossroads Show in Indianapolis, Indiana this weekend. There were 10,276 birds entered by 768 exhibitors for the joint ABA/APA national meet. The really amazing thing is that 5 exhibitors entered 44(!) naked neck bantams. This grouping is probably the largest group of naked neck bantams to be shown in a decade. Sylvia and Bela Babus took BB with a white NN bantam pullet and RB with a red NN bantam cockerel. There is serious talk among the exhibitors about reviving the old Naked Neck Breeders Society!

Ouch, sorry that happened. Turkens are supposed to have single combs, so if that rooster really had a pea comb, someone who supplied the hatchery definitely did some major mixing.... he sounded like a magnificent beast though!

I'm heading back over today and will post the numbers of the large fowl NNs as soon as possible. I wish I could manage mobile uploads of photos from my phone camera...

I'll check the next time I pick her up. She's a bit of a brat, so not sure when that will be. She likes to run behind me and peck at my barn boots if I don't have treats.

Hoping she'll calm down when she starts laying. Her hatchmates do not have the same pigmentation. It seems to have just popped up one day, so I started calling her bruisie.. but a normal bruise will change colors eventually! LOL.

Congrats also to Nava - finally a NN picture of the week!

Haven't checked her vent, but I looked at her walking around yesterday and the backs of her legs are almost black and she's got a dark pigmented wash around her feet. Fronts of her legs are yellow like the others in her hatch. So I am guessing you are right! Bruisie is going to be a bruisie forever.

Ooh.. it would be awesome to see pictures of NN at shows. I'm really curious about the types on the birds people are taking to shows, especially a big one like you are so lucky to be at! Thanks for thinking of us.

Funny! if it's fibro, it *may* fade eventually as her skin thickens and becomes more opaque. My chick turned out to be a cockerel, eventually the black bones in neck and skull could not be seen any more as his skin thickened and reddened.

If it's gypsy face, it will stay there forever, with some fading and intensifying with the seasons and laying.

Either way, think she's really cool.

Got to go put on sun block, shorts(it's 80F) and do some chores.

Well, I am positive Bruisie's a girl (she's about 20 weeks old LOL).. she's next to impossible to get pics of tho! I notice her hatchmate also has a dark beak, but the rest of her, including feathers, is much lighter.. The other buff NN's I have, from that hatch and the previous, all have yellow beaks.

her hatchmate (no name yet):

Hi Everyone .
I am new to the forum but have been interested in turkens for a long time . I just now got my first Seramas and would like to find a turken or a showgirl locally to ad to the flock . A hen is preferable as i want to use my serama roo to bring size down on the Bantams chicks. I was going to read all of the 273 posts here to be sure i was not being redundant but it will take far more time than I have available right now.
can anyone recommend a breeder of turkens or showgirls that are local to the seattle area and would be able to sell one or two birds at a sexable age . I am ok with older birds and show quality is not necessary . I would like NN as they will be outcrossed. Also I have read that naked necks are very cold tolerant and that they are not tolerant of cold . I'm curious what this means . Are certain strains more tolerant over others or is this more about what some people call cold . we rarely hit below 30 here so maybe someone can let me know what this would mean . currently I bring my searama in at night if i think it will get cold<40 but am planning an insulated coop . that said i would prefer to breed chickens that are hardy for this temperature range . Thanks for the help and I'll be looking at all of your great photos of great chickens as time allows .

Jamie when I lived in the NE Us my turkens tolerated cold very well. And while reading information regards to their origin and history, I remember reading that they are hardy and cold tolerant. Mine were out of doors in the snow and rain. Now I live where the drinking water freezes but stars to thaw as the sun warms it. My bantam turken hens were hatched from eggs shipped from TN. The breeder is trying to widen the color variety. I have one which seems to have Serama in her background. She is tiny and very sweet but most eager at treat time. This has been posted before and I wish I had a newer picture but I don't.
